Ozempic Breath!

Anonymous
I recently started taking a compound semiglutide and am loving the results with almost no side effects - except 1. Terrible breath. Other than basic good oral hygiene (which I have) and mints (which I also have)how did you combat it? Since it's coming from the gut would tums or other of the like help??

You are probably in ketosis, which is known for awful breath as your body is burning fat for energy.

The best you can do is take a lower dose to slow down the burn rate.

Not me. I've been on it for 5 months.

Probably a symptom of acid reflux.

Bad breath is totally unrelated to your GLP 1 use. There’s just no mechanism in the drug that would impact breath.

Never noticed this on anyone. Probably just you.

I’m surprised people don’t know more about this. So GLP 1 agonists dramatically slow your digestion; this is why gasteoparesis (digestion paralysis) is one of the side effects for a small number of people.
One side effect of slow digestion is food lingering much longer in the gut, so you actually get bad breath not from mouth bacteria but from the food going bad inside of your body. I have found that just eating extremely small portions, staying very well hydrated, being impeccable about your oral hygiene just to be on the safe side all help a lot. I did end up buying some digestive enzymes – chlorophyll pills. Those seem to help as well. Just be super mindful about eating small and easy to digest portions and listen to your body. For what it’s worth, I took the medication for only a few months and lost all of my excess weight, I had almost no side effects and am an avid weightlifter and walker and eat extremely healthy. This medication can be a godsend to get you to where you need your health to be, but you do have to be careful and hyper involved in using it.

This was my thought. At the beginning, I was getting pretty dehydrated and had to make a concerted effort to drink water.

Phazyme gas pills help a ton with the bad breath from GLP1s.

It's ketosis. There are rinses you can use for this.

I had it and I had awful smelling burps. It did stop as my body adjusted but wow. Gross. Sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night and feel a burp come from inside my stomach all the way up and it stunk to high heaven. I mean bad. And it was so weird to feel it come up. I think it had everything to do with food sitting in my stomach longer and gas building up. But it stopped after the first 6 months or so.

I don't know much about ketosis, but I do know these drugs make me dehydrated. Everyone tells you to drink 8 glasses of water a day. I had to boost my intake up to over 100 ounces. That helped with bad breath. I also use Listerine Clinical Solutions specifically for bad breath.

Drink more water. Re-analyze your diet.
