Health Insurance for Studying Abroad

Anonymous
Hi does anyone know where you supposed to get Health Insurance for a semester abroad? In Paris but traveling to other countries as well.

Ask the organization running the program. My DC spent a semester in Copenhagen and he was provided insurance through the National system in Denmark. He was given a National health insurance card and assigned to a doctor.

Check what your insurance covers during international travel first. Also Your child will have access to pharmacies and ER / A&E : whatever for emergency care via the social healthcare system. What else do you need for 3 months?

The program should offer inexpensive health care insurance. Your own insurance might offer emergency care overseas. It’s evacuation insurance you won’t likely get from either. Maybe credit card but their stay might be too long. You could look at World Nomads or similar if you want evacuation.

You should definitely have medical travel/evacuation insurance, but often, your home university will offer/require.

If you need to provide your own, and have Blue Cross Blue Shield, there is a BCBS supplemental travel plan that can be purchased to add coverage for the added expenses of vacation emergencies. I am not sure if it works for school semesters but it's worth knowing about.

You register with the Paris l’Assurance Maladie

Above is a link describing what is required, from one of many Parisian colleges with overseas students.

Our insurance (Cigna) met all the requirements imposed by the US university for travel abroad. My DC also studied in Paris and French student insurance was included. It was pretty amazing and my DC ended up using the French insurance rather than the US insurance (Cigna would require out of pocket payment and then you submit for reimbursement). The doctors is Paris do house visits (come to your apartment and have the visit right there. They also had “office hours” at the school when you could just drop by if you were sick. Also, free eyeglasses were included so my DC got an amazing new pair of chic glasses (also free). Seeing an outside therapist was covered too, which one of my DC’s friends did.

If they are going with school, their policy should cover, no?
