Homework due dates during snow closures - HS

If something was assigned last week, due today electronically - is it still due today? Stressed 9th grader would like to know.

Why is your kid waiting until the last minute to do homework?

I would treat it as due today and get it done.

I would think homework assigned before the snow would still be due. Nothing's changed - they got the brief, they had the time, they were supposed to submit on Canvas outside of class anyway. Exceptions would be if there was ongoing supplemental instruction required between the assignment date and due date.

My understanding as a long time McPS parent is no, it will be due when they get back to school. But it’s a good idea to get it done today if possible since the deadlines when they go back are alll going to end up being stacked together wildly. A lot of times a Tuesday assignment was predicated on what they were going to review Monday though, so if kid doesn’t have all the info yet, I’d wait.

Are you trying to prepare your kid for college or a job at McDonald’s? If it’s college then yes, it should be in by the deadline, if not earlier.

Snow days are not school days. There will be make-up days. All previously assigned work is due 2 weekdays later than previously assigned.

My DC (10th grade) was assigned new work yesterday and expects more today (I haven’t asked them yet today). They spent several hours on it yesterday.

Why not just have them submit it to be sure? If it was due today and it's not done & ready to be turned in, that's a different issue you need to tackle.

Where do you see this in district-wide policy?

Kid had stuff due today that wasn't done by Sunday night so he missed a spontaneous ski trip with friends bc we made him stay home to work on it to submit on time by Tues AM. He was not happy but we had discussed this at length on Saturday and Sunday morning - letting him know he should get stuff done so he could enjoy the snow day on Monday. Didn't happen so he stayed home. Sucks for everyone.

Yes, just like assignments are due on weekends. We had several teachers assign new work the past two days.

He didn't miss a spontanous trip due to school. He failed to due his work on time and you gave him a consequence. That is on the kid, not teacher/school.

My 9th grader checked and she doesn't have anything due. I would tell yours to submit everything on the original date just to be safe. Also, if we have the very rare situation where we get a lot of snow days due to multiple snow events, I would keep an eye on any AP classes they're taking, because the College Board AP exams are always in May and they don't care if the kids missed instruction. You might have to supplement with Barron's workbooks or a tutor.

I would ask the kid to operate on original due dates until the teacher has emailed otherwise.

I wasn't blaming the teacher or school. I meant sucks for everyone in that he's mad and we feel bad.
