3.7 UW at rigorous private HS with equivalent of 8 APs?

Hello,

My niece is midway through Junior year so hasn't had her appt with college counseling yet. But she is a hard-working, engaged student at an academic private (not DMV) that is competitive to enter. She will have the equivalent of 8 APs in core subjects when she graduates. They don't offer APs per se but have their own version of it (similar to Andover). She wants to study social sciences (poli sci, history, econ) in college but has been strong in all core subjects to date. Her unweighted GPA is 3.7-3.8.

She is not targeting the top 20 for some reason (except maybe 1 reach). But from your experience, what schools would be good targets or matches with decent likelihood of admission.

She acts in the school play and is involved in the school's newspaper and literary magazine. She is not an athlete.

My sister is not American so she is a bit confused. I do think she'll learn more from her college person when that appt happens. I have a freshman in HS here in DMV and she asked me to post. I'm also from outside the US.

Does she live in Virginia? Do you know her PSAT/SAT/ACT scores? Also would be good to know if she needs financial aid, wants a certain area of the country or size of school.

It would be helpful to start with geography, size and setting. What is your niece interested in with regards to these three aspects?

- I would suggest considering Hamilton.

OP here. She'd prefer NY/NJ/CT/MA/IL (where she has family) or west coast. She is open to all sizes. I think small to medium would be perfect, but she's open to large too if those are her only options.

She is quite social and extroverted.

She is not in the DMV. Niece will take SAT for first time this spring. I don't know her PSAT. She is full pay I think.

Yes. This is very important. Otherwise, you're just going to get a variety of colleges with no grounding of fit or interest.

I agree we need more info about size, location/setting, and geographic preferences. Would she prefer a large school or smaller liberal arts campus. She will have plenty of options based on the info provided. College counseling office should be able to provide substantial guidance.

its going to depend a lot on the high school but some options might be
Tufts
Boston College
Boston University
Hamilton
Colgate
Syracuse
Lafayette
Lehigh
Maybe Chicago (depending on the high school)

Pretty much anything outside of the top 10 liberal arts colleges and top 25 national universities.

It's going to be very hard for DCUMs to gauge the admissions potential of a student from a school outside the DMV unless it has a national profile. If she's at the top school in Des Moines or Phoenix or whereever, no one here is really going to be able to give you tailored advice.

Her stats are likely too low for the T25. She will get much better info from her school counselor and naviance/scoir than this board particularly since she is not local.

Anything T75+ seems appropriate.

Here is a list for Political Science programs. You will need to filter for selectivity based on her profile, but it may be a helpful list to begin looking. Includes some mentioned above. American and George Washington U. are probably good to look into.
