What does it take to get into UMD from a MoCo high school?

Every MoCo school isn't the same. My guess is that it's easier to get in from Damascus or Sherwood than from Whitman or B-CC, to give some examples. UMD will say this isn't the case, but you really are competing against other applicants from your school.

Very high GPA, OP. That's what it takes. And don't forget to apply early, UMD states it takes 90% of their freshmen in early action.

How is this allowed?

Because they don't want all of their students to come from the same handful of schools full of high achievers whose parents can pay for tutors, test prep, travel sports, etc. Same reason why it's also easier to get in from Garrett Co. than Montgomery Co.

My daughter went to Wootton last year and about a quarter of her class was accepted to UMD. Most of them ended up going there.

53% of Whitman students who applied got in last year, according to Naviance.

Only about 33% from B-CC.

Of those who got in, about a third enrolled. The scattergram shows the boundaries between majority admits and denials (with some outliers) at around 4.5/4.6 WGPA and 1420/1450 SAT. My kid went TO and those kids seem to do well at her GPA. We’ll see. I think you can only analyze trends so much.

An open mind once at UMD. This helps you more inclined to expand your network beyond the comfort of your HS friend group.

My MoCo HS DC was disinclined to apply to UMD because he felt like everyone from HS attends UMD. We explained that at a large university there are plenty of other people and a million clubs! He attended and while his classes include many former HS classmates, he meets people from all over the country on his extracurricular clubs and activities.

Best answer to this question will come from the Naviance scattergrams for your school.

Agreed. I think people too often focus on their kids GPA and not on class rank. A friend's kid didn't get into our state flagship with a 4.2 or 4.3. But when you dig into it that 4.2 or 4.3 isn't even in the top half of the class.

Does MCPS have class rank on the transcript? Anne Arundel County is leaving off class rank for the 1st time this year and I'm wondering if he AO's compare rank from all the applicants from the same high school? Or do they not include rank as a factor in admission?

No, but they send the senior class profile that includes the GPA (unweighted/weighted) grade distribution. You easily determine who is in the top 25%, middle, and bottom of the class.
