How to protect car seat when checking

We have a short flight and are bringing our carseat to check. Do we need to buy a the special red "gate check" bag to put it in so that it's protected from grime, etc.? I saw someone post that they think a garbage bag would work just as well--has anyone done that?

just did the garbage bag deal and it worked fine.

The last time we flew they were able to wrap them up for us at the airport. Might be worth a call to see if that is possible.
