Everything I read about prednisone indicates it’s usually a miserable experience for those taking it, but I’m having the opposite experience.
Was prescribed a week of prednisone following a severe asthma attack and I feel incredible. Heightened mood, more energy, and my skin looks fantastic! (I’ve had low-level rosacea for a couple of years and it’s cleared right up.) All of this on top of no more asthma symptoms. Is this common? Would my provider enable me to stay on a low dose of prednisone (is this a feasible option for treating asthma? I was using my inhaler way too much previously.) Interested in hearing others experiences, and of course would love the input from any medical providers. TIA. |

Sorry, but heck no OP. Didn’t the doctor who prescribed warn you of long term effects of prednisone?
https://www.mayoclinic.org/steroids/art-20045692 If you had a severe asthma attack that can mean your asthma is not under control. Follow up with your primary care doc (or specialist, if you have one). You may need to change up your inhalers or dosage. |
I’m following up with her this week. TY |

A high dose steroid will clear up things pretty quickly. I've been on it a couple of times and have felt great when on it because it tames down a couple of chronic conditions that I'm unable to treat and are more of a nuisance than anything.
However, long term use of steroids is not good and comes with a lot of risks. |
|
I’ve taken prednisone many times.
In the short run, I feel amazing. It’s when I’m on it more than 2-3 weeks that the side effects begin. |
|
It’s supposed to make you feel great when you take it for a short time period.
Long term use is when the problems start. |
| For an asthma attack, I’ve taken it for maybe 3 days, not a week! |
| I know what you mean, OP! I took it for chronic hives and felt absolutely amazing for several weeks. But that was back before all the negative side effects became well known. When I weaned off, I still felt good but that little “high on life” feeling was gone. |
+1 and getting off is hell |
|
I had to take it for 7 days to test if a brain tumor was cancerous or not (it wasn't) and the doctors all assumed I'd be feeling like you, top of the world etc on it, but I felt terrible.
I was weaned off it though, reducing a pill a day til the end. |
The afterwards part is terrible. I will never ever take prednisone again. Ever. |
I said that too then had to do a dexamethasone pulse (basically prednisone on steroids) I was so sick. |
|
I felt like this the first time I did a one-week taper of pred. Every pain in my body went away, including ones I didn't even know I had.
I repeated the experience recently a decade later and had weird swellings in all my joints and felt miserable. Never want to do it again. |
| I”be been taking it for decades for a chronic illness and it helps me live my life but the LT side effects are very bad |
| Some people are irritable on it, and some euphoric. I'm also one of the latter. Long-term effects are horrible though. |
