Preschool and Daycare Discussion
| I know it will be fine but my 11 month old will soon (a few weeks) be moving to the 1-2 room at daycare. She eats all table food and does great with her sippy and is nearly walking. And I know developmentally it will be good for her to be in that environment, you know more stimulated and whatnot. The napping thing really has me worried though - they nap on very low to the ground cots and man it seems like she is just SO young for that. She moves all around when she sleeps and I'm freaked that she'll fall off. And sitting at a table for meals? Good lord. Please let me about your childs transition and reassure me that she'll be ok!? |
| It will be great. The cots are totally no biggie, the fabric inthe cot sinks a little when they lay on it so its not easy to roll out. Also, your little baby is probably sooo redy to take the next steps! They are so proud of themselves and its so fun to watch. |
| Agree with PP. And, never underestimate the power of the group when it comes to things like sitting at the table. |
| She'll be fine!! Actually my son was a terrible napper at home and in the infant room and does GREAT in the toddler room on the cots. I think it has to do w/ the group mentality as well as the nice quiet room as opposed to the infant room where some were always awake, on different schedules. He just did so well w/ that transition, having more space to play and move. You'll be fine! |
| I had the same concerns when my daughter moved up to the 1-2 class in daycare, only to be very impressed at her first birthday party in daycare. She sat at the table with the other kids, ate her slice of cake and at the end, reached to pick up her little dixie cup of milk (no sippy cups at our daycare). I almost reached over to stop her, but the teachers stopped me so I could observe my DD chug down that little cup of milk. At one year old. I was speechless. As a PP said, you will be very surprised at how much they can do at this age! |

My DD is the same age and also transitioning, and I'm actually kind of excited about the cots. She's a rotten sleeper and dropped her morning nap on her own over the weekend, so that isn't a concern. Because she doesn't enjoy being in her crib at home, I'm terrified she'll escape. I figure if she does OK on the crib at school, I'll move her to a toddler bed earlier than planned at home, which I know runs contrary to received wisdom, but every child is an individual. The thing I'm worried about during transition is adjusting to a new caregiver because she just loves her current teacher.
I think sitting at a table and drinking from an open cup would be amazing...bring it on! |
| I just transitioned my daughter today. She will do just fine. Naps wont' be a problem. |

We just transitioned my son from a in home provider with 4 children to the toddler's room at a center.
He went from: private nap rooms (yes, he napped separately from the other kids because he was a light sleeper), eating and napping and drinking on demand, etc... to the full center schedule the first day. Took a two hour nap in a cot (previously, we'd be lucky to get him to take 1.75 hours in a crib at daycare) and eating at a little table without restraints (he tries to stand up in his high chair so we can't leave him unattended, ever). The crowd mentality really works. Your kid will do fine -- it's amazing! |
Me too! It went really well, from what I can tell. And she's so exhausted from keeping up with the bigger kids that she went to bed early - bonus! |
| We were shocked at how our daughter immediately took to the cot and eating at a table... they started doing it without us even realizing it and when I peeked at her on the webcam I couldn't believe it. Called my mom, husband... DD took to it just fine. |
| The first week for rough for DC but then she was totally fine. She naps for 2 1/2 to 3 hours on cot whereas she only napped 1 hour at a time in her crib in the infant room. Personally, I think the table for meals with chairs close to the ground is a lot better than sitting in high chairs. She loves sitting at the table. In fact that's the first place she goes to when you drop her off in the room. Overall, DH and I had a lot harder time adapting to new room than DC. |
| OP here. Thank you all so much, just what I needed to hear. I know she'll likely love it and do great - they pick stuff up and adapt much easier than we do! |
| Don't worry, it will be ok. At our daycare, they have little straps on the chairs, but they don't even have to use them - DS remains seated. In addition, the cots are low to the floor. If there is a problem with your little one trying to crawl off, they will probably let her sleep on a nap mat on the floor instead. They did for my DS. |
