Stuck in NYC - chances of getting out Monday night or Tuesday?

Anonymous
So, we are in NYC and discovered the garage where our car is parked is closed till Monday AM (I know, I know).

It looks like the storm tapers off just north of Philly (no snow in NYC). What are the chances/should we try to leave the city Monday night and drive as far as is safe, then get a hotel or leave early Tuesday from NYC? Anyone have experience traveling the day after a storm?

I am leaving on a flight from IAD on Tuesday at 9:40 PM, so the goal is to make that flight!

Can you contact the manager of the garage? Explain your situation

A. Yes, that's what I would do. NYC hotels are expensive.

B. If you can't drive home until Monday, no worries. There is a pretty stark cutoff northside of the storm, so you should be good to drive to Philadelphia on that day, unless the forecast changes. Please check it every day. Get a hotel there, to wait for snowplows to work overnight, then go home on Tuesday, and pack for your flight.

Yes, but we’ve received no response so I’m trying to plan for the worst case

Worst-case scenario, you leave one of you behind with the car and you who needs to get on the plane takes the train back to DC. In my experience, Amtrak runs well during snow storms. Maybe with some delays but they don't stop.

You aren’t getting out before Tuesday- ditch the car and fly home. Go back for the car later.

We tried this as well! Most of the Amtrak are cancelled Monday. Have one at 2 PM that isn’t cancelled yet bit not holding out hope.

Check your Tuesday flight, they might be offering free reschedules. Maybe push it back a day and try to drive Tuesday?

Thanks, I think Option B is our best case.

So get out tonight or tomorrow, don't wait for Monday.

Take the bus home instead of Amtrak. Peter Pan isn’t too bad. Try to change your Tuesday flight. Drive back late Monday.

Can you change your flight and fly out of NYC- or take a commuter flight into IAD on Tuesday?

PP you replied to. And keep an eye on the changing forecast. There will be snow in Philly, but hopefully driveable snow. It looks like there might be two rounds: one front thump of snow Sunday night into Monday, and, possibly a second thump Monday into Tuesday, but that one is less certain. So the closer you are to home on Monday night, the better. I hope you're on a street that gets plowed early!

Bus--Best Bus, Mega Bus, Flix Bus--we have bought last minute tickets before.

Interstates should be passable into DC on Tuesday morning.
