Fencing?

Anonymous
My son has become interested in fencing. Does anyone have any experience with any of the local clubs before we pay for lessons?
Thanks!

There are a few good fencing clubs in VA and MD both competitively and recreational. What weapon (epee, foil and sabre) is your son interested in? Most of the clubs have a free trial class before you commit. Before signing up for lessons, see if your son likes the environment of the club and the ratio of competitive to recreational fencers. I would try at least 3 clubs for the weapon he chooses. There are pros/cons between small and large clubs. We found that larger clubs did not fit for us as the coach to fencer ratio meant newer kids (i.e. stronger fencers often do not want to fence with new fencers) were not getting the attention. A very small club meant our fencer had 2-3 fencers to fence with during open bouting. We have found that a medium sized club with excellent coaches have given our fencers the attention they needed to build a strong fencing foundation. Pricing also varies. Some clubs have lower fees or private lessons because they have fewer coaches or situated in an industrial area. Some clubs will give you a free month or lessons to get you to sign up. Some clubs will over promise and under deliver on how they can get your fencer to a certain level by certain period (don’t believe this as there are many variables). Best advice is to try out a few clubs (competitive and recreational clubs), notate the pros/cons and most importantly, how does your son enjoy fencing at that club. Good luck!

Try to get trial classes at a few places before you sign up. Most will give you a week to check it out and see if its the right style.
