Looking for some advice on where to buy in MoCo!
My DH and I are moving to with our two kids 1 yo and 4 yo. Our budget is 1.3M, though that is our max. I'd like to stay within 1.1M, townhome or single ok. 1) Well rounded/academic school district. I do not want to pressure my kids into attending magnet programs or be pressured to compete with their peers at this age, but we are looking for schools, especially ES and MS, that are generally well rounded. Plus would be enrichment programs that are offered broadly to the general population. 2) Family friendly neighborhood with young families/young kids 3) Walkable neighborhood with amenities a plus, though not required if #1 and #2 are met. We are also open to FCPS or other districts. Most of our family live up and down the 270 corridor so MD would be a bit more convenient from that sense. DH and I work remotely so commute is not a concern. |
Consider Beall or Bayard Rustin elementary schools. |
+1 Was going to suggest RMHS cluster. Other cluster to look at is Northwest. |
A other vote for RMHS. Walkable family friendly is kentlands and lakelands but the middle and high schools are bad; you would need to be able to do private. |
Another vote for the RMHS feeder schools. And I would add in the falls grove neighborhood. Basically, look around exit 5 and 6 on 270, with east of 270 (Beall and Bayard Rustin) definitely being walkable and neighborhoods with lots of families. |
Takoma Park |
I would look at Kentlands/Lakelands in Gaithersburg. All schools are walking distance. |
We live right off exit 6 on 270. Wootton cluster schools, plenty of families and super convenient to everything. Inventory is very low though. |
Look in Glover Park in NW DC. |
RMHS cluster. West End, Woodley Gardens, Fallsgrove, etc. |
Willows of Potomac is a nice community. We have an acquaintance who lives near this house (IDK what the neighborhood is called) and there are lots of families and kids there:

If walking to amenities isn't a priority any of the neighborhoods feeding to wyngate ( wygnate/Alta Vista) or to Ashburton where you can walk to wildwood |
Look at 20815/20816
Westbrook, Sommerset, or Rosemary Hils/Chevy Chase ES Westland MS BCC HS |
Yup, when I read the OP, my first thought was Rockville and RMHS cluster.
If OP doesn't want to deal with magnet programs or the consortium lotteries, I would stay out of eastern MoCo including Tacoma Park. Even if you wind up in the Blair feeder and are happy with your IBs, the culture is still towards people moving around to magnets plus you don't necessarily have access to the magnet programming as an IB family. It's the downside of having more school choice -- it infiltrates the community and no one is ever totally satisfied plus your kids lose friends to that movement even if they stay put. |
i live off exit 4 east of 270 and my townhome neighborhood (tower oaks) feeds into Bayard Rustin and RMHS. neighbors are quite happy with the schools, it is a relaxing area. its not walkable to Rockville Town Center but it's a 30 min walk to Ritchie center and those shops. |
