Health and Medicine

My 6 year old son has one enlarged lymph node on his neck for the past year. We've brought it up to the pediatrician and he has said it can be normal in thin children (he is 50th percentile) and nit to worry.
Every one in awhile he also gets quite tired from a lot of physical exersion, again normal. He also sweats while he sleeps. I've looked all this up and cone across some pretty serious diseases. Should I get a 2nd opinion? Or have our peed investigate further? Or am I just worrying? |
I am all for getting a second opinion. Most likely your ped is right, but I don't have a lot of faith in pediatricians. (Had a bad experience or two). They aren't specialists so it's easy to miss something or not be up to date on the research. Do you have a PPO that allows you to go to whomever you chose or do you need a referral? I'm not quite sure what type of specialist you would go to, but it's worth asking around. Again, I say do this for peace of mind, not because I think something is wrong.
I think your pediatrician is probably right but I don't blame you for wanting to get it checked out. I wouldn't got to another pediatiatrician. I would got to an infectious disease person or an internal medicine person, at a hospital-based center, either KKI or Children's.
OP here, Thanks for the replies. Our ped is actually an Internal Medicine doc at Georgetown. Maybe I should talk to him again about it. See if any further checking can or hould be done.
If you can see Dr Peebles at the Pediatric Heath Care unit in Bethesda (Spruce Tree Road) he is actually a child oncologist (and a very fine doctor).
Try a pediatric ear, nose and throat doctor.
