Summer swim team options in Bethesda/Rockville/Kensington area?

Anonymous
We recently moved to Maryland. Our neighborhood swim waitlist is years long. What are some summer swim team options we can get our swimmer into this summer? Any decent pools in the area without waiting list?

Also, looking ahead to when we get off our waitlist - I had heard that MoCo swim used to have some rules restricting transfers between summer swim teams, are those still in effect?

The public pools have no wait list and you can join there for the summer. For the area you identified, you can look at the public pools in Bethesda and Rockville. You’ve identified a pretty big geographic area so being more specific would be helpful.

Getting off a waitlist is one of the reasons you can transfer teams within MCSL with no penalty even if the swimmer swam A meets.

Join whichever is closest to you or that your kid friends are going to go to.

I believe Connecticut Belair does not have a waitlist

+1 OP when the neighborhood pool is full, families go one neighborhood over. Find out which pools your neighborhood pool swims against on Wednesday nights. Those should be your backup pools.

+2 you don’t want to be driving all over moco for 5 practices a week and all the social events…

+3 Also, part of what makes summer swim so great is that it's a neighborhood thing - these are the kids your kids know from school, see around, etc. Depending on your kids' age(s), it can be helpful for getting to know kids from other elementary feeders to middle/high schools, too.

OP, people will be able to give you more specific advice regarding your best alternatives if you tell us what waitlist you are on.

What ages are the kid(s)? Do they want to swim A (saturday/points) meets, or do they not care? As other people said, county pools have no waitlist, but Bethesda for example is division B, and it seems a lot of those kids also are in year round at a quick glance.

Try Wildwood Manor and Connecticut Belair as not far from may be your hood.

Tilden Woods does not have waiting list and is in the middle of the geographic area that you mentioned.

See if your neighborhood pool offers temporary memberships to those on the waitlist. We have been on our pools waitlist for 8 years, but have received a summer membership offer each year except the first, which allows our kids to do summer swim.

Any Country Club interest? Try Kenwood. On River Road in Bethesda. Much more expensive but if you are looking for golf or tennis anyway, might be worth an inquiry.

Bethesda Barracudas! Great team open to all. My son loves it.

Correct. No waitlist because we are physically the largest pool grounds in the county. Also plenty of room on the swim team, especially if you have boys.
