We went to Cub Run recently and my daughter loved it, so I’m considering GWL, but I’m not sure whether it’s our scene. She’s autistic and has trouble with large crowds. I have a medical condition that’s exacerbated when I get too hot, and I suspect the air in there is hot and humid. I also have trouble climbing a lot of stairs. Can we do GWL or would it be a disaster? I did the slides at Cub Run a few times and then sat and watched her, which worked great. Can you do that at GWL? |
We like great wolf lodge but if she is autistic and affected by loud noises and non structure, then I would suggest not going there.
It is super noisy and kids are running everywhere and some kids go wild in the water. Eg. We have kids in the lazy river deliberately blocking and moving so slow in parallel to create a “traffic jam”. Normal kids find it fun but autistic kids could go berserk with the non conformity to rules. |
And yes. Forgot to answer your other questions. Yes you can sit and watch.
It is also humid and hot. And depending on which GWL you go, some even have a “cafe” just outside and half in between for you to catch a breath. There are also generally not many stairs to climb within the park unless you are doing the bigger slides. But the noise level is another thing. My Apple Watch tells me it’s more than 90db! |
There are many existing threads on this - in the Travel Forum. Maybe search foe them. |
My autistic kid loved it, but he isn’t bothered by noise. We were there on a weekday, and it wasn’t too crowded. I did see a child wearing headphones while waiting for a slide. I don’t remember feeling hot - I like it to be warm when I swim though. |
Hi there, I was just there over the past weekend. It was extremely loud and very crowded. I personally had a bit of a problem with it (I’m not very comfortable with noise/crowds), and I think there’s something about it being an indoor water park that made me feel extra overwhelmed, as I’ve never felt that way at an outdoor water park. It is indeed very hot; extremely hot in the water park area.
The noise starts right in the lobby, too, as people are waiting to check in and are also going to the various restaurants and gift shop, and the area before the water park entrance also has an arcade and a ropes course, etc. It is very crowded and chaotic, everywhere, even waiting for the elevators. I eventually kind of adjusted, but I have to say I endured it, and I’m glad my kids enjoyed it. My husband was with my girls the entire time, and he was climbing tons of stairs and running around. I wouldn’t have felt comfortable just sitting and watching. In your situation OP, I would probably stick to Cub Run! I’m glad that is a place your daughter loved. Also, try watching some YouTube tours and videos of GWL, they might help you get a better feel for it—though imagine being very hot! |
The food is revolting and I definitely caught Covid there.
The air temp is actually kinda nice however and the kids have a blast. |
Lots of hillbillies if that’s your thing |
My noise-sensitive autistic child loved it, but we went at an off peak time when it wasn't that crowded. As long as your child is water safe, you can sit and watch. I think only the biggest slide had stairs. It was warm, but not really hot. |
Isn’t this true for any type of theme or amusement park? |
Go midweek. |
I did not see any hillbillies there. Seemed mostly like nice suburban families. I don't think hillbillies can afford to go to GWL. |
+1. Midweek, and go to the waterpark early when it opens or late before it closes. We did that it wasn't noisy or crowded. |
Have you ever been to Disney? |
We went last weekend with our 5,4 and 2 year olds. It was fine. The food is absolutely revolting, I wish we ha left and eaten elsewhere for dinner but they have you captive. I'm a wimp about water temp and it wasn't quite warm enough for me but the kids had fun. You can use the facilities the whole day of check in and check out so there's no reason to go for more than one night. My kids enjoyed the arcade the most. |
