Munich/ Austria with two boys

Any towns in Tyrol that you’d especially recommend for a summer trip? Planning to fly into Munich, stay a few days, then spend a week or so near the Austrian alps. Innsbruck? Salzburg? Any smaller hidden gems?

Boys will be 6 and 9. Playgrounds, opportunities to watch or play sports, easy hikes or bike rides would all work well with the backdrop of some lovely scenery for my and DH. Older boy would probably be interested in Mozart stuff in Salzburg but wouldn’t stay in Salzburg solely for that reason if other towns might work better for us.

Or would you do lake towns outside Munich instead of Tyrol area?

Salzburg > Innsbruck.

Make sure you see the trick fountains outside Salzburg - highlight of the trip. It’s really amazing. You also should go to Hallstatt and the salt mine - they’ll love it. Outside of Innsbruck is also the Swarovski museum which is interesting.

If you are up for a little driving, visit Neuschwanstein and take a tour.

There’s a ton of family resorts around there for all budgets that have lots of summer mountain activities. It’s really a great area in the summer.

Had a great summer trip with my kids to both cities at that age. In Salzburg, they loved the big slide at this park: https://www.theurbankids.com/en/salzburg-outdoor-zauberfloetenspielplatz/, the funicular https://www.salzburg.info/en/travel-info/arrival-traffic/cable_railway, and a trip to the Eagle's Nest as DS is a history buff. In Munich they loved all the parks and gardens - we walked a lot and took the bus as needed.

We took my then 6 year old to Munich and had a great time at Lake Tegernsee. Very easy drive from the city.

Also take a look at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region on Germany-Austria border. Zugspitze (highest mountain in Germany) is in this area and offers many outdoor activity opportunities in summer. https://zugspitze.de/en/Our-mountain-worlds/Summer

Hohenwerfen Castle is another interesting and scenic site, about 40 minutes from Salzburg. They have a birds of prey show a few times a day that children may enjoy.

They are all amazing depending on your family's interest. Salzburg is a little more family/kid friendly. There are so many outdoor things to do. This is awesome: https://www.salzburg.info/en/travel-info/infos/keltenblitz-alpine-slide-in-hallein_az_13369610

And you can pair the saltmine with Eagles Nest: https://www.salzburg.info/en/sights/excursions/salt-mine-berchtesgaden

To all the people recommending Eagles Nest make sure you understand what it is and what happened there before you go. It’s not just a pretty scenic view.
