Lifting toddlers post c section

Anonymous
When were you lifting your toddlers post c section? I have a four year old and two year old. Thanks

4-6 weeks. The most you should be lifting is the newborn. You’ve had (or will have) major abdominal surgery. Respect that healing process.

I was able to lift around three weeks, though I was pretty cautious. I think a casual lift here or there is ok - I didn’t do carrying until six. I lifted early in one of those “have to” situations…not just because my 3 year old wanted it (something happened on the sidewalk and I had to grab her fast).

Sure you were “able” to lift. There is no alarm that will go off. Doesn’t mean that anyone should be doing it at 3 weeks.

6 weeks. The faster you try to be recovered, the longer your actual recovery will take.

Please avoid the lifting now. You can sit together to cuddle.

So true.

The four year old is old enough to understand no.

+1 to whoever said to cuddle sitting

Absolutely no lifting before 3 weeks, 6 would be better

Agree. After major abdominal surgery, you should really only walk to the bathroom for at least the first three days. Every time you walk, it undoes the healing. The pelvic floor can’t recover properly. Lots of women are having problems with this.

You really need help with your older children and someone to bring you food. Please reach out to family and friends. Also consider your faith based community if needed. Your recovery is essential. Please do this so you’ll be ready to parent all three, down the road.

I’ve had three c sections at three different hospitals and every one has done everything but mandate that you’re walking the halls in the first 24 hours. The bolded is absolutely untrue, you’re not running marathons but moving sooner than later equates to better healing.

How soon do you recommend navigating stairs?

I was able to do stairs when I got home from the hospital. I didn’t make unnecessary trips but it was fine as long as I took it a bit more slowly.

I’m not understanding how that’s a good idea.

I'm not understanding how it's a bad idea. I have had three c sections and every time the message was movement = healing. They want you walking and moving as much as possible. Not running or lifting or exercising necessarily but walking and moving 100%. If you walk up a flight of stairs with caution you will be fine. And if you live in a house with a lot of stairs then you will need to walk up them. I walked up two flights of stairs to my bedroom the same day as my tummy tuck (to repair all the damage the three c sections caused!).

The key is to know yourself and be on the lookout for limits. I had a couple early lifts because like a pp said, something happened or I did it without thinking because I also had toddlers. If you feel something twinge, stop immediately. Rest often. Keep moving. I followed this general advice (stop if it hurts, rest often, move often) and I was always basically back to normal functioning in life by 10 days, and exercising/cleared for everything by 5 weeks (with doctor's approval). Between that 10 days and 5 weeks I would gradually do more as I felt able.

The guidelines are important but they are for the least common denominator. Listen to your body, keep moving but only do what feels right. Good luck!

I had a c section in September and was lifting my son in/out of his crib at 3 weeks post c section. My husband had to go back to work and I had no other help during the day so I had no choice.
