Tell me about St Mary's and Soloman's Island, please

It looks like there are no beachfront properties, right? So you stay somewhere that's not on the beach and then you drive to a public beach? Is that how it works? (If you want a beach vacation.)

There aren’t really beaches. There are the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay, each with lots of inlets. Some areas of each have small beach-like areas, but no wide sandy expanses.

Yes, this is not the place for a beach vacation.

Correct, no hotels on a beach in Solomons Island. It’s more of a boating community. You can go to Riverside Beach, park across the street.

+1. We used to live in MoCo and loved to make day trips to Solomon’s Island a couple times a year, but it was not somewhere we would have stayed for more than maybe a long weekend. If you are close enough to make it a day trip or long weekend it’s lovely, I don’t want to discourage you from visiting altogether.

What do you do on a long weekend?

What do you do on a long weekend?

A hike at Calvert Cliffs, a visit to the Marine museum, browsing the shops, lots of places to eat and drink on Solomons, a drive over the bridge to explore St. Mary’s County. There is enough to occupy you for a long weekend.

My dad lived there while he was living in a sailboat. There is a lovely marina and sailing. And the marina had a pool. So plenty of water but no beaches.

There is a lighthouse to visit. A marine museum. It’s a lovely quaint place. But if you want beaches it’s not what you want.

St Mary’s City is great too. Beautiful small college on the water and an archeological site with a recreated 17th century small village.

Yes, but if you’re accustomed to city or suburban sprawl, miles of quiet countryside can be serene and enjoyable. (I say as someone who lived in St Mary’s County years ago.)

Do I really have to explain the difference between someone that grew up there and someone just visiting for a day as part of a long weekend?

I think that part of Maryland is lovely, OP. Very nice for a weekend trip. Also, if anyone in the family is an aviation buff, lots of military jets fly out of Solomon’s island.

Summer riverside concerts at the college are fun. Various of the communities off Rte 4 have community beaches (and fun fossil hunting) but also jellyfish in summer.
