Going to Perth Australia my travel itinerary is very tight

Anonymous
I’m headed to Perth. I booked my ticket through Qantas and feel it’s very tight on layovers . I have a 1 hour 13 minute connection in LA to Sydney and a 1 hour and 30 minute connection in Sydney to Perth. I am less concerned about the layover in Sydney and more concerned about the 1 hour and 13 minute connection in LA. If my original flight to LA is delayed I’ll miss my connecting flight in LA to Sydney. I called and they said it’s enough time. What happens if I don’t make the connections? Thanks! I’m going solo and I’m nervous.

Also, for those of you who have been to Perth please send me the dos and donts. Greatly appreciate it!!!!

Yeah if you miss at lax i would imagine you have to wait 24 hours. I wouldn’t.

The LAX connection sounds really tight. Do you have to get your luggage and recheck it?

No. I do not have to get my luggage

I agree it’s too tight. But they won’t change it for me. I have to pay a fee

How much is the fee?

Best thing to do is research other flight options on Qantas and AA so you know what your options are. Qantas might be able to send you to Melbourne, or Brisbane, for instance

If it's just you or just 2 people, easier to rebook in the moment.

I don't know if this will work but if you are carryon only, you could go to the airport early and ask politely if you could board an earlier flight.

Once during poor weather, I was allowed to fly earlier from DCA to Newark. Another time, I was considered too late to get through security at LAX for my flight so they told me just to go through security and report to a new flight's desk to stand by for the next one.

Once you're at the airport, the airline may have more interest in helping you make your connection for free.

Sydney connection probably too tight so likely you’ll miss the connection anyway. Does the Perth flight leave from the same terminal or do you have to transfer? When are you travelling?

Maybe try calling within 24 hours before your departing flight to see they will change at no cost? I’ve done this with United.

You will need to get any checked luggage and go through immigration in Sydney. If the Perth flight is from the domestic terminal, you will need to get a transfer bus. Best to travel with carry on bag only to give yourself the best chance.

This. You’ll need to get checked bags, go through customs, and get to domestic terminal most likely. 90 min not long enough. Although missing that flight is lower stakes, you will be able to rebook later in the day. LA to Sydney you’ll have to wait a day most likely.

Side note- why Perth? I love Australia. Never crossed my mind to extend my travel by that much when the east coast has so much to offer by itself. Perth is sort of meh (in my opinion of course. It’s also super remote from anywhere else in the world basically, so, maybe that’s the appeal for you! Which is kind of cool! It’s just an unusual spot to visit from the US)

What airlines?!

If it is Qantas domestic in Australia they have streamlined connection processes. Is this all on one itinerary.

This is a good idea but I’ll have a checked bag so I’m worried they may not do that
