Interested in going in the Spring, curious if anyone has been and how it was? |
Following! Harbor Island has long been on my list. I like hot hot hot weather, and the Bahamas has a shorter season for that, so we have yet to visit. I was hoping to travel just before Disney started docking on island, but missed my window.
I follow a number of ELH resources and it would seem that staying north of the Glass Window Bridge is ideal if the weather turns. The bridge closes and then you have issues getting to the airport etc. oh! And petty car theft seems to be up at beaches, since they are so remote, so don’t even leave a pool noodle in sight. |
Oh good to know! I kind of wondered about it since the beaches aren't very crowded. |
Bump! We are going next week! It was hard to find a car - make sure you do it early if you’re going when it’s busy. Would also suggest looking for one with decent clearance so you can get down to the more remote beaches. |
We loved Eleuthera! Rent a car and explore different beaches, do a boat charter with fishbone tours, visit the botanical garden, enjoy lunch at Tippy’s. Snorkel at Spanish wells. |
Eleuthera beaches are amazing. That said, it’s not for everyone. The airport has some serious infrastructure issues. If all goes well it’s an easy trip. If not, it can be miserable. Consider taking a charter flight. Especially if you have a bigger group it’s not much more costly.
No worries about Disney now docking there. It’s on the southern most tip and if you’re on the north part of Eleuthera no chance people docking for the day will get there. You will still have beaches to yourself. Be prepared for the expensive and shitty car rental you are going to get. Seriously bad. The drivers are terrible and there is one long road that takes much longer to get anywhere than you think. The steering wheels are usually same side (but not always!) though you drive on the other side. I won’t go out driving after dark. If I was going with kids I’d fly into ELH and take a charter to Spanish wells and skip driving all together. Rent a golf cart. We like Spanish wells a lot. Calm and shallow forever. Harbor Island is a little more bougee and also nice. We just prefer the more casual Spanish wells. Both harbor island and Spanish wells require a quick ferry ride which is no big deal. If you want to do a lot of driving around and exploring beaches then you probably want to stay on the main part of the island. The Beach Book by Bret Siglio is definitely worth the cost if you are going to explore. |
Super helpful … appreciate the tips. Thank you! |
I will add to take anything you may need. You do not have many shopping options except maybe in Governors Harbor. You may go to the grocery store and they are out of eggs until the next boat. Many people routinely pack meat and food and take down coolers on the flights. Power occasionally goes out. That’s what I mean when I say it’s not for everyone.
We’ve gone a couple times and progressively pack less clothing and more food/supplies. Like I pack butterfly bandages and medical supplies I think I may need. You can’t just run to an ER quick for stitches. That said the beaches are amazing and worth it. |
