What proportion of parents use nannies vs nanny shares vs daycare for the first 2 years in NW DC/ close in MD?

It seems like there aren't that many infant daycares around NW DC/ close in MD neighborhoods (CCDC, AU Park, CCMD). Do most people use nanny shares or nannies vs daycare?

How do people go about finding nanny shares if that is the route they go?

According to the lastest scientific study, it's 38.4% that use nannies vs nanny shares.

We used a nanny for a year, then in home day care for 18 months before preschool.

There are tons of great pre schools in that area. In my experience it’s either SAHM or nanny until 2-3 when they start preschool, which still requires a SAHM or nanny because preschool is only half day.

Not many people do full time daycare.

We’re in CC and I would say 1 in 4 kids goes to daycare, the others have SAHP or nanny.

We used a NAEYC accredited day care

In the areas you specified it’s predominantly nanny or SAHM (or both). Shares are more Columbia Heights, Brookland, etc.

Yeah there don’t seem to be too many shares around here, but I’ve seen some people looking for them on the various list servs or Facebook groups (Chevy Chase chatter or forest hills/Chevy Chase parents).

Live in Tenleytown and there are multiple infant daycares (Two Birds, SAECC, BCDC). That said, most parents I know had a nanny. I don’t know anyone in this neighborhood who had a nanny share.

Babies need to be at home. As a former share nanny, it was always hell at nap time for the visiting child. Bargain childcare is never a good deal for your child. Please consider your child.

lol there's nothing bargain about a nanny share-- still costs more than day care and daycare is a massive expense similar to college tuition. would be lovely if everyone could afford a personal nanny but that will never be true

Nanny shares are illegal in MoCo unless the nanny share goes through the listening process, similar to an in-home daycare. That’s why they’re more prevalent in DC but rare in MD. I live in Bethesda and the only people I know who have ever used a nanny share are in DC.

Depends on parents work schedules. I’ve noticed some families in medical field use both as they work long hours.
