Looking for suggestions for restaurants that can accommidate a low sodium diet for my 90 yr Mom. She loves to eat out, but is finding it very hard to limit her salt intake while eating out. I took her to Silver Dinner thinking they would at least list sodium content on the menu, they don't. The waiter tried very hard and the manager looked up the sodium content for individual ingredients in menu items, lots of hidden salt everywhere.
Has anyone had any success in finding any low sodium options in restaurants. Her idea of low sodium is 1/2 a pastrami sandwhich and coleslaw which was followed by a night in the hospital - I would like to avoid that in the future. |
| I would try True Food Kitchen at Rio Lakefront. |
| True Food is an xlnt idea. No Chinese, etc. No mass produced food like at Silver Diner. No Applebees, fast food, steak houses (they oversalt). Call in advance and ask. It's asking too much of personnel to show up and then ask them sbout sodium content. They don't know and it varies by chef in the kitchen. Almost all restaurant food is oversalted. Buy some books on the subject and educate yourself then call around about preparation. Most chefs don't even speak English anymore so the onus is on you to figure it out, not ask after you arrive |

Far East on Nicholson st. will customize their stir fries. Pick dishes with white sauce, not brown, and request light salt, no MSG. They have a Peking Shrimp Dish with plenty of vegetables but substitute white meat chicken. You can also ask for no salt and add your own seasoning. I like Momofuku's tingly salt, a lot of flavor using just a little. You can also request that minimal oil be used. Chinese restaurants that consider themselves a step above will do this.
They have handicap parking. I would do weekdays only or late afternoon on the weekends. P.S. I follow a low sodium diet too. |

| True Foods and Seasons 52 suck. You are better off looking for a personal chef to come to your house. |

I think steak house would be easier if you tell them don’t salt the meat and baked potatoes.
