good hair dresser for kids with sensory issues?

I'm not looking for a cartoon cuts. Just looking for a nice gentle hairdresser that won't freak out my daughter. Calm, quiet setting would be best. In DC. Any ideas?

Interested to hear about this, too. So far have been cutting DC's hair myself.

I have to chime in here. My ASD son had a fascination with combs when he was quite young. As long as the barber/hair dresser let him hold a comb, he did wonderfully. IN fact, he was better than my NT kids. Take a favorite toy for them to fixate on and you may not have any issues.

I second the recommendation for Crystal from Youth Salons. She comes to your house, which is so nice. She's used to dealing with special needs children and can cut my ASD son's hair even when he's freaking out.

Hi - For the first 2 years of my son’s life every haircut was horrible and stressful - tears and sobbing and that was just mommy! Being slow learners, it finally dawned on us that cartoon cuts was NOT WORKING and would never work. So, we took a break from haircuts. Instead, we decided to take our son to watch mom and dad get cuts. (We got many trims). Almost by accident, he also tagged along when some friends got haircuts. After about 6 months of this strategy, he told us he wanted to back to the place where his friends got a cut - he was 3 so figuring out where he actually wanted to go was challenging. So, now we go to the Bradley Barber Shop, 6918 Arlington Road, Bethesda, MD 20814-5206, (301) 907-7870. Long story short, there is an elderly gentleman who runs the shop who is so soft spoken and gentle. He calls my son "best boy" and gives him very gentle praise during the cut. My son just feels safe and secure there. They have a little plastic elmo doll he sometimes holds. So, even if you do not use this shop - my best advice is to take your child to any proposed salon to just watch other kids getting a cut. If your child approves, it makes everything so much easier.
