What should I have out for guest?

Anonymous
We weren’t planning on hosting anyone this year, but suddenly a family friend will be coming through on their way to family on Christmas Eve. They’ll be visiting around 1-2pm and don’t plan on staying long, so no official meal, but I feel like I should offer something. A charcuterie feels basic. Can I do better? Or is it best to stick with that sort of thing?

Charcuterie and/or some holiday cookies and desserts. Tea and coffee. Keep it simple.

Five Guys burgers and fries with caffeinated sodas.

Eew! Cold burgers (because there's no way to time this right) wilted fries and nasty chemicals on melted ice. No thanks.

Charcuterie plus some fruit is perfect. Offer fizzy and flat water, coffee/tea if they need a boost.

Personally I think charcuterie might be a bit heavy or digestively challenging if they are traveling and have dinner ahead.
Cookies, cake, coffee or tea..

I think the good thing about charcuterie is you don't feel compelled to eat more than you want, unlike being served a plate and feeling like you have to eat it. I'm not into the heavy cheeses and don't eat meat, so I would just be happy with the crackers.

I agree. I’d likely eat none of it, or like PP, a few crackers and a beverage, but my husband would have no issues with having his share!

Ok almond mom. Some of us have healthy digestive tracts and like to eat. Stick to your celery stick.

Make an easy dip like artichoke or spinach artichoke or French onion, and add crackers and crudite. Or just do a baked Brie with crackers and crudite and some dried fruit.

Old friends stopped by around 2 pm today on their way to her mom's about 2 hours west of here. I made four kinds of sandwiches and cut them in quarters and arranged them like apps. I used ham on pumpernickel with mustard, store bought chicken salad added lettuce and served on white sandwich bread, provolone cheese and salami on pumpernickel and a cream cheese mixed with cranberry chutney on white bread. I had a tray of pickles, olives, carrots, an celery. I offered seltzer, water, tea, coffee, and juices for the kids. I put out a tray of cookies that included peanut butter kisses, sugar cookies, candied orange peel dipped in chocolate, and gingersnaps.

I made a lot in case they wanted to take some with them for the rest of the trip. This is a mom, dad, three ES kids and we a couple and two ES kids. There were a few pickles left.

That's really sweet. I think something like this or charcuterie is perfect.

Charcuterie can have spicy or seasoned cured meats. Indigestion city. Enjoy your Bloomin Onion
