| Does MCPS really not offer any assistance at the elementary level for a second grader who is struggling with math concepts? I am told by the school that they do not. Only for help in ELA. I spend 45 minutes to an hour doing homework with my second grade child. Sometimes the math is not difficult for her but different strategies she will struggle with and i try to explain it to her Sometimes without success.. I've communicated to the teacher this, and specifically which concepts are a struggle for her to understand but do not receive any helpful suggestions. I am frustrated and not sure what to do. |
| I'd just spend some time on stratagies, but work more on traditional math and teach the math facts. Much more useful in the long run. I liked the Kumon books. |

Schedule a meeting with the teacher to discuss. You can also reach out to the grade level lead and/or Counselor.
Have you used the Eureka math parent Tip sheets? Are there previous concepts that she is not understanding or mastered? |
|
Do you have an IEP?
You need an IEP. |
| OP, I would suggest signing up for a free Zearn account, which is linked to Eureka math and has videos that explain the concepts and additional practice. There is also Khan Academy, another free resource aligned to common core. I’m sorry your child is struggling and that the school is not helping. |
| When do you even start Math these days? When I was in third grade I recall taking the CAT and we didn’t even know what division or multiplication was. Teacher just said to guess the answers |
| Mathnasium |
What do you mean when do you start math? It is a standard class required from K-12th grade. |
? just because the child doesn't understand some math concepts doesn't mean that the child has a SN. |
Khan Academy and math games. My kids played lots of math games, yes online, when they were little. Both took calc in HS, and the college aged kid is a math/CS major now in college. They said Khan Academy was actually pretty good. Don't do Kumon. They tutored there, and said it wasn't that great. |

math help second grade addition, subtraction YAY! the struggle is real |
There used to be a homework hotline in mcps. Another option is Saturday school. many talk about the website Khan academy, not sure how that works. |
|
what do her MAP-P scores look like?
I would not panic yet and jump to IEPs. I suggest Khan academy too or google whatever she is having trouble with and try to find some online games to help. Also, if the homework is taking too long you should talk to her teacher about reducing it. |
| The eureka books are confusing. I told my kid she doesn't have to do that homework. They do math I give them instead. |
Why are you being such a jerk? OP's child is struggling. |
