Sex Ed in schools

Is there sex ed in the schools? My kid’s in a charter in 3rd grade and I haven’t heard or seen anything about it. When I was in school, sex ed started in 4th grade. Granted, I went to a progressive independent school in another state, but I wasn’t sure what’s the norm here. Does it start in elementary school or only upper grades? What grade?

When I went, I knew absolutely nothing about sex until 6th grade sex ed

They’re doing sex ed at my child’s charter in 5th. At my other child’s charter they got it every year in middle school.

It varies a LOT. Some are not until high school (!!!)

If you want to teach them about sex, teach them about sex.

Latin has a section about general sex ed taught during the Health curriculum in both 5th & 6th. It seems helpful and age appropriate.

I recall getting letters from Whittier about sex ed in around 3rd or 4th grade. At Wells it's part of the regular health/PE curriculum each year.

Why aren’t you already teaching your child about sex? You should know your child best.

OP: yup we are already teaching him about sex and puberty. It’s useful to learn it at school too

At our ES, there’s a unit in 5th grade taught in connection with the nurse, social worker and PE teacher.

I’m not sure if it counts as sex Ed because it’s not about inherently sexual information but they are supposed to start with puberty and menstruation in 4th grade. This is relatively new though and this may be the first year it’s implemented.
