| The 12 year old is a good reader and has read the standard given my family and school. I wanted to give a book not too heavy but a fun read - please recommend |
| That’s the perfect age for the His Dark Materials series by Philip Pullman! (Golden Compass, Subtle Knife, Amber Spyglass) |
| Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth (Author), Ernestine Gilbreth Carey (Author) |
I love that book. It’s hilarious, but be warned that a major character dies at the end. |

Randall Munroe books? (I haven’t read any, but they’re by the creator of the xkcd comics).
Far Side or Calvin and Hobbes comic collections Hidden Talents by David Lubar Holes The Westing Game How to Eat Fried Worms I haven’t read these or if I did it was long ago, so I don’t know if these are appropriate for a 12 yo, but you might look at: Terry Brooks - Landover series Terry Pratchett - Discworld series Douglas Adams - Hitchiker’s Guide series A neighbor boy loved the Eragon series when he was that age. Again, I haven’t read it, so I can’t comment on appropriateness. I also think they’re not so much fun as dramatic and dark. If you’re okay with dark and dramatic, Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising series is good. |
| I posted my suggestions above, but you might get more responses if you had this moved to the Tweens and Teens forum. |
Thanks for the suggestions. Didn't even see the Tweens and Teens forum - good to know - will post there for future |
Calvin & Hobbes contributed to my son’s large vocabulary starting in elementary school. FoxTrot was a close second. |
