Heartburn absolutely killing me

Anonymous
I’ve always had acid reflux/GERD issues but I can’t take my prescription Dexilant - at least I don’t think. All I have seen online is that it may not be ok. I’ll have to call my doctor but every medical website including the Dexilant site seems to warn against it unless absolutely needed

I bought omeprazole today and took one earlier but it not kicking in. What has worked for you? I have that burning in my throat/esophagus all day and all night

Warn against it while pregnant that is, of course***

Lansoprazole (Prilosec) worked well enough for me during most of my pregnancy. Occasionally had to supplement with tums. Eating an early dinner and no evening snacks also helped. I gave birth two days ago and the issue is gone!

Omeprazole/Prilosec takes a couple after days to kick in. Do not take it more than 14 or you will suffer acid plus rebound.
Take it on an empty stomach. Eat something 30 min later to kick off the PPI. Read the instructions.

Pepcid A/C has a different mechanism. No rebound. Read instructions.

FWIW my husband started 40 mg of Prilosec in the am and 40 mg of Pepcid in thr pm per GI last year and it made a world of difference. Maybe try lower doses of both and check in with pcp/ob re: pregnancy. Good luck!

Sorry but your husband was not pregnant.

OP: You must check in with your dr what is safe. Unfortunately giving birth is the only thing that helped me. I'm super short and my boys were super round. It was terrible.

I’m 8 months pregnant and just been taking 2 Tums at night as needed. It doesn’t completely resolve the heartburn, but makes it tolerable enough to sleep. The most helpful thing was cutting out anything greasy or tomato-based after lunch.

I got an RX for Famotidine (Zantac) double dose during pregnancy and took it daily. It totally works! Also, I went from having horrific daily heartburn (sometimes I even woke up choking on acid) to ZERO the second they pulled my sweet baby out. It’s so temporary that I would take the highest dose of everything they allow.

When I was pregnant many years ago I carried a bottle of Mylanta around with me and swigged it a lot. I had heartburn really bad. The Mylanta helped. I have no idea if there's a reason not to take it.

I'd also try Pepcid AC. Prilosec/proton pump inhibitors never worked for me, even faithfully taking them for a month.

For foods: A baked potato with a little sour cream personally helps me with heartburn. I'd also try some hot chamomile tea. Avoid anything with a tomato sauce.

Try also eating smaller more frequent meals as your stomach space is smaller.

Had this experience - got rx for Protonix from my OB and it was miraculous. Don't wait and suffer through - ask for help!

I took Pepcid every 12 hours (7 am, 7pm) during the second and third trimesters with both of my kids. I was miserable without it but could eat normally with it!

I took Nexium with both of my pregnancies.
