Metal roof - worth it?

Anonymous
We've been having issues with our low-slope roof over our porch and one of the companies I spoke with said we should really consider a metal roof for that part. He broadly said that it was "expensive" but I haven't seen the quote yet so I don't know how much more we are looking at. I'm more concerned with how noisy it will be - it's a big surface area and our bed is right next to the windows over the roof. If you have a metal roof:

- is it really noisy in heavy rain?
- how much maintenance do you have to do on it? (he mentioned something about yearly checks?)
- is it worth the extra expense?

Copper roofs are very low maintenance and last for at least 40-50 years. Ours is not noisy, but our attic is insulated.

We love ours. Virtually no maintenance. I find the sound of rain on the roof pleasant (and it's not too loud and you mostly just hear it upstairs.). Ours is over 30 years old and looks nearly new.

I looove metal roofs, the look, the sound of a summer rainstorm

But the price was double a standard asphalt shingle roof. Couldn't justify it

It was maybe 3 times the cost when I looked into it years ago. For what ever reason they aren't popular here but much cheaper and popular in other areas.

During COVID we did a metal roof for the main house, shed and garage for around 35K. Totally worth it. Zero low slope issues since then. I love the way the rain sounds too.

PP with the metal roof and agreed it was double. That said, there is no other solution for a low slope roof other than tar (which looks terrible).

Our metal roof quote was a bit more than 2x quotes for asphalt. We love it and have had it for 6 years with zero maintenance. We live in a very stormy, rainy area and have a 3-story house, so it was especially important to minimize maintenance so we wouldn’t have to get workers up there. People here who don’t have metal have to have moss removal 2x/year or else it lifts the shingles. I hated having those guys work on the roof and felt like they always damaged something- the deck, the gutters, plants, etc- in the process of clearing the moss.

I love the sound of rain on our roof. We do not have an attic so there is just a small void and the sound is not muffled. We are moving to an asphalt roof house with an attic and I will miss the sound of rain on the roof more than any part of our old house. I feel stressed about the asphalt.

I don’t like the sound of crows hopping on the roof, though!

Are you planning on being in your house a long time? Metal roofs cost more in the short term but pay off in the long term because they tend to last 2 or even 3 times as long as asphalt roofs.

Also they are very very easy. No maintenance, no worries about wind damage, no worries about leaking. Easy to install solar on with no penetrations and no need to worry about the solar panels outliving the roof.

We are very pleased with ours.

My parents have one, it's not noisy, they love it.
