My daughter is considering a career in law as a freshman in college. I advised her to read a few books (biographies, autobiographies) about lawyers or judges as one step in her research.
Any suggestions for her? |
| John Grisham |
| Gunning for Justice and other works by Gerry Spence. |
| Gideon’s trumpet |
| The Brethren |
|
Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
Basically every supreme court justice has a book; Lovely One by Ketanji Brown Jackson is the newest. |
|
+1 for Just Mercy.
Others: Jonathan Harr's A Civil Action and Jeffery Toobin's The Run of his Life: The People vs. OJ Simpson. |
| Thank you! I will get a few of these for Xmas. |
| As a non-lawyer, I really enjoyed A Civil Action. Great book. |
|
Is she looking for books that will give her insight into the actual practice of law, or fun thriller-y type books involving lawyers, or...?
It's really nice you're cultivating this interest for her! |
| Or watch the movie “On the Basis of Sex” |
| I went to law school, specifically Tulane, after falling in love with Darby Shaw while reading The Pelican Brief. |
| A Civil Action, Just Mercy |

If you want to give a realistic/ un-romantic view of legal work:
-Anonymous Lawyer by Jeremy Blachman -Biglaw by Lindsay Cameron -The Local by Joey Heartstone -The Partner Track by Helen Wan https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/37229.Misery_of_BigLaw |
|
Have her watch the Netflix show, the Lincoln Lawyer
(recommend the show over the book) |
