What to do and see in Boston over Christmas and New Years

Is it even worth the drive from DC to experience Boston during the last week of December and first week of January?

Yes! You can have lots of fun in Boston. Walk the Freedom Trail, eat Italian food in the North End, see a Bruins or Celtics game. Check out the Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Gardner Museum, or the Harvard Art Museum (free entry and great exhibits). Or check out the glass flowers at the Harvard Natural History Museum. The aquarium and Science Museum are also great. If you have kids, check out the Harry Potter exhibit in Cambridge. There is a First Night celebration on New Years Eve with free musical and other performances and fireworks. Ice skate at Boston Common. Lots to do!

Staring the obvious but it will likely be freezing cold; I’d pick visiting someplace more mild in late Dec and save Boston for say spring break (when it will still be cold but not frigid).

Those are great recs above, though! The Museum of Science/planetarium is another indoor activity we’ve enjoyed.

Previous poster from above: people in the Northeast know: there is no bad weather -- only bad gear. Wear warm clothes and you'll be fine!
