Next year

Seems early but we are starting to think about next season. Have elementary and middle school kids. Mako and York look like best options by distance and practice times.

Wondering which you’d recommend and why. Anyone have experience with both?

Maybe machine or Ncap could be an option but a little bit further. Location is likely to win out unless a compelling reason otherwise.

What time do you want to practice? That’s a big consideration. Some have practices at God-awful times, while others have reasonable practice times but would put you in rush hour traffic. Also, reach out to the site manager. You can schedule try-outs for Spring and not have to worry about the summer league fever.

I also think age of your kids needs to be a factor and how fast they are. For example I would do the travel for a speedy 11-14 year old for NCAP MU but not for a younger swimmer

Mako is only at GMU, so I'm assuming you're in Fairfax vicinity and want practices either at GMU or Oak Marr (York/Machine). Assuming that's the case, you could add Foxes and CSC to your list, or even Shark Tank for your older kid(s) - all have GMU practices.

Sorry, Oakmont, not Oak Marr anymore.

Makos also is at St. James. For clubs you're interested in, check their websites, practice group locations/descriptions.

Does Makos have any groups that practice exclusively at STJ? I could be wrong, but I thought that it was just that some of the more advanced GMU groups have one session/week at STJ.

Most practices for AGers are at Mason. They use the SJs on Saturdays for highest group.

During pandemic, they used Mason, but no longer except for select practices.

How old are your kids?

York and Mako are good clubs with strong swimmers and promote fun and camaraderie. foxes is good too for a smaller club.

Definitely do a Spring tryout. Join then if you can. Once summer league starts it gets crazy.

That is not accurate. Makos has very few practices at St James for very few groups. The practice locations are on the mako group descriptions.

We’re happy with makos swim instruction. They have nice families, good coaches, good organization and communication with more of a team feel.
