If you ride a motorcycle (rant)

What's the deal with revving your motorcycle? Is it considered cool? I find it soooo annoying. Especially because it always seems to happen just when I've laid my daughter down for a nap, or put her to sleep. Of couse, I believe in the death penelty for anyone who does it at 3:00am. Grr.

yeah, folks who drive motorcycles with insufficient muffling are in an arrested stage of development. They're basically stunted 4-year-olds. "Lookit mee!!!!"

Agreed.

Share the road? Yes. Save my eardrums! Please.

I agree revving the engine is not the right thing to do but they are loud by design so people hear them on the road, because many people just glance to see if it is clear to change lanes, motorcycles are not as easy to see as a car.

The reasons to rev your motorcycle:

1. When it is cold, to warm it up faster. Not mechanically the healthiest thing to do, though.
2. To have fun. Yes, fun is a matter of interpretation.
3. To startle you if you are in the next lane texting or talking on your cell phone when you should be paying attention to the road. You deserve that.
4. To keep a bike from stalling at a red light. This really is better addressed by adjusting the choke/idle.

I'm not here to justify any of these and I currently don't own a bike. But these are the common reasons.

I agree they're loud by design, but I disagree that that's the primary reason for those type of exhaust. I rode an old BMW for over a decade without incident and it was about as loud as a sewing machine. There's really only one brand of motorcycle that has this particular "feature", and it's 99.9999% about personal branding and .0000001% safety.

Ha - I agree with the rant. But, it's not just the motorcycles. The guys (usually - and not just young guys) who also revve (sp?) their muscle cars at stop lights annoy the crap out of me. Every time I see someone doing that I tell my 21 mo DD to avoid guys like that.

My sarcastic guess is many of them are overcompensating for something else they lack.

My sister threw a half eaten ham sandwich at two bikers who were sitting at a corner revving their engines for the better part of an hour while clearly just loitering (i.e., not actually riding, just kind of talking to one another and letting their engines idle then rev, idle then rev, idle then rev).

It supremely stupid and I'm glad she wasn't killed...but since she wasn't, I have to say I think it's pretty damn awesome!

Ok, but let us say you're sitting on a small residential neighborhood in DC. Just vroom vroom. VROOM VROOOOOM.
