I've read about how there have been fraud issues with gift cards, and have actually even had this happen to me at a few places. (Once I gave someone a gift card and the money actually wasn't on there - luckily I had the receipt and we got it fixed!)
I normally just go to Walgreens, but wondering if it's 'safer' to buy from certain stores versus others. Mostly looking for gift cards for Amazon and would prefer an actual card versus an e-card. |
Where have you had this happen to you?
Never had this happen and we buy gift cards all the time- from the grocery store, BJs, Target, etc. |
Directly from Amazon. |
I had this happen at Best Buy! And I actually got the gift card from Best Buy.
Also have been to stores (Barnes and Noble) where I have taken a gift card up to the register and the cashier says it's an 'invalid' card or something so they have me go get a different one. |
+1 I’ve had it happen. If you purchase from a retail store, tape the receipt to the gift card. This gives the recipient some leverage if the card has been hacked. |
I like this idea. Will do that, thanks. |
I’ve received a hacked card. I believe it was bought at grocery store or target |
I bought a high value gift card from WHOLE FOODS for Amazon, you know a subsidiary, and it was EMPTY. Even with a receipt I couldn’t get refunded, there was some discrepancy on the 40-digit codes that I missed when I compared them. We only buy from Amazon website and ship to our door. I wish we could go back to freaking cash… |
So are you comparing the codes on receipt with your gift cards every time? |
m This is what I do too. One note, if you order cards in different denominations, use the serial numbers on the order confirmation to figure out which one is which. The denominations are not always on the card. |
Target |
If you doubt that this is happening, here is an NBC short video on how the thieves are draining the cards.

I only order direct from Amazon. The ones in the mini gift card holder (the little envelope that's about card sized) are sealed in plastic now to prevent fraud. |
There's also a scam where the employee will activate the card at the register for a higher amount and then hand you a card that only has like 10 dollars on it and the employee keeps teh higher value one. Since some cards look identical no matter how much is on them, you don't know they were swapped. |
Oh that’s crazy |
