Recommendations for Auto Insurance in DMV

If you’ve had an accident and your car was totalled, were you happy with how the insurance company handled the resolution? I’m looking to switch carriers because every time I call in, I get a different story from the reps. I don’t blame the reps, I blame the crap private equity management who has destroyed this once-great insurance company. Appreciate any recommendations, thank you.

Ours dropped us when our DC totaled a car. We are AAA members and they picked us up. And gave us a very decent rate.

That’s a no for me.

Our car was hit by Geico driver. 100% their fault. Repair cost made car total loss. Geico said that we were 10% at fault because accident could have been avoided. (It could not) so they were not going to pay. Our insurance company (State Farm) stepped in and made them pay. SF has its own issues but we’ve been fairly happy with them. I will never go Geico.

Amica was always exceptional to deal with, but their prices got exceptionally high and, after having them my entire driving life, we went with Geico. Luckily, we haven’t had any accidents since switching. If cost wasn’t a significant issue, I would never have left Amica.

I had geico and got in a car accident where I was at fault and the other sued. Geico handled everything with ease. They next year they had my insurance go up by ten dollars a month which was no big deal to me, so I stayed. However, when 16 year old got added, it went up dramatically so I shopped around. Progressive was the best price so I am now with them. With that being said, just shop around and know that you can switch whenever for whatever reason.

This just happened to us with GEICO and the process was smooth as silk. They even gave us more money than we paid for the car.

A tip for adding young / new drivers

Provide report card and have them take defensive driver course

Geico lowered it for both kids when we added them.

Geico does drop. I had Geico my daughter away at school did not add to policy. My bad, while home she scratched a guy in parking lot. She gave my insurance card. Driver of course calls it and Geico claims not paying as not on my policy. I called guy and said look it is a scratch I will pay. I then went to add her to policy.

Geico then just dropped me. Did not offer to allow me to add her. The other driver, total coincidence got into a major accident and totaled his car before anyone could pay him me or Geico. So me or Geico never paid for scratch.

Geico reported accident with another vehicle on my kid, even though my car zero damage, we never got picture of other car as totaled shortly afterwards and no payouts. So Geico left me looking for new insurance with the tag of an accident on the policy.

We went to Progressive, my daughter is on policy and they are way better.

We are shopping right now for a new auto insurance provider. We have liberty mutual and so expensive. $1950 for one car. We have been lifers and they covered when our car was stolen in city and paid us out well but do they care if we called them and asked them to reduce? I am going to call around for pricing from other providers. We also do our house with them which is double the auto price.

From the insureds perspective, Geico was going to bat for them and really protecting their interests by assuring they were truly at fault.

Geico was in the right here.

I have Geico and it has been great dealing with them for both at fault and not at fault accidents.

Recently I've had to deal with Erie for a not at fault accident that involved a totaled car, and everyone has also been really easy to work with.
