United personal item bag

Anonymous
I have to take DS to a medical appointment that is a 2 hour flight on United. The doctor's office was able to squeeze us in last minute due to a cancellation. I purchased the cheapest United fare since we will only be there one night. The fare does not include a carryon, just a personal item that needs to be able to fit underneath the seat in front of us. DS will take his backpack, no issues. I am having trouble finding something for my personal item that can fit a change of clothes, a small amount of toiletries and things that typically go in a purse (phone, keys, wallet, tissues, etc.) Does anyone have any experience only taking on a personal item that fits clothes? Or any suggestions? Thank you!

I usually use....a backpack!

Don’t overthink it! A tote or reusable grocery bag is fine. Wrap the contents in a sweater so they don’t spill out, or tie the handles.

I have traveled with just a small backpack that fits under the seat.

If it doesn't all fit into the bag, wear it or put it into the pockets of your jacket or coat.

Yes. OP, just head to Walmart or Target and they will have regular school size backpacks for sale that will work just fine.

Any weekender bag can fit under the seat as long as it’s not stuffed full.

Your purse only needs to be inside your small under seat bag as you enter the aircraft.

Wear your travel clothing both days. Wear on the plane any outerwear you'll need, like a lightweight travel jacket. Bring a change of underwear in a small backpack. Hotels provide basic toiletries; do without your special makeup, creams, lotions, etc for a couple of days. All you need additionally is a toothbrush, travel-size toothpaste, some dental floss, a small hairbrush, and a travel deodorant. Bring any prescriptions, of course, and chargers for your phone/watch/iPad. That's probably all you need.

Just pack pjs and clean underwear. You can wear the same clothes both days. Bring any bag you already have. Backpack, tote, grocery store..

I carry on all these things as my personal item in a tote bag almost any time I fly. I often stuff a smaller purse inside the tote to use at my destination. You can use any old backpack or duffle bag too.

Put some of your stuff in your kids bag

Since it is winter you can use your coat pockets for some of those purse items. I use a very small cross body purse for travel and stuff it in the top of my carry on as I board the plane, even if it means the top is open (I have never done the United basic fare so this is just to get down to a roller bag and a personal item).

I also have a pretty good size personal item bag that I use for international travel that has almost as much space as my roller bag and never had any trouble with it.
