We agreed to provide gifts for a family identified through a local DMV government social services agency. So, it’s government, not a charitable organization. Is the money spent tax deductible? We have receipts for what has turned out to be nearly $1,000.
Does it vary state to state? Thanks. For the record (re: complaints on other threads) the wish lists were so reasonable I could cry and we tried to get everything. Winter coats and shoes for teens just cost a lot. |
| I don't think so..there is no charitable org involved. |
| wow. |
| Definitely just ask the organizers. They will have the correct answer and a form if you need it. |
| You sure there’s not an umbrella organization affiliated with the outreach effort? Asking because I work for a faith-based charity 501C3 and hand out official forms this time of year, especially with Angel Tree. |
Hope that’s not sarcastic. We agreed as a family to do this instead of gifts in-family. We never spend this much on gifts, but we all have winter coats and shoes. So for me, it feels like a lot of spending at once, though there’s nothing that seems excessive for the receiving kids. |
Thank you for mentioning this. Talked with friends who do this through faith-based groups, but this is social services. I’m a little embarrassed to ask, because we didn’t do this for a tax credit. |
I think that’s a really silly thing to be embarrassed about. It’s accounting, not values. |
