My 18-Year-Old College Student Looking for Work Over Winter Break

Anonymous
I’m a parent of an 18-year-old college student who’s looking to make some extra money over winter break. My child is willing to take on any legal and safe job—whether it’s tutoring, babysitting, delivery work, or any odd jobs that come up. If you have any leads or suggestions, we’d really appreciate it! He would literally do anything.

Post on your HOA group or Nextdoor, also check with your friends group. Look around area for retail job signs.

Did he take any life-skill electives in high school, like construction or metal shop? My neighbor’s son is a senior in high school and made a ton of money last summer, welding for a manufacturer. They said they’d take him back on breaks through college.

The odds of this are unbelievable, how is this helpful?

The odds of taking Introduction to Welding is unbelievable? How? I think you can take it as early as 10th grade.

I'm just wondering if the kid has any life skills.

Whole Foods had a ton of ads for seasonal shoppers on LinkedIn last week. (My DD is doing the same as your DS).

NP here. The odds of a manufacturer hiring a high schooler after he took Intro to Welding is what is unbelievable. But, who knows, perhaps he is a prodigy. Whatever the case -- it is not likely something that is realistic for many 18-year-olds. They will not be hired to be welders, electricians, plumbers, etc despite taking those particular classes during high school.

My Harvard freshman DS will be doing SAT/ACT tutoring prep over the winter break, and he charges $125/hr. He scored 1600 on the SAT, 36 on the ACT, and 800 on multiple subject SAT exams. He will tutor about 4 hours per day, and all of his students are recommended by parents of former students. Their parents will write a gift check for him, so he does not have to pay taxes.
