Excused absence HS?

Anonymous
I thought I posted this but can’t find it.
Is it an excused absence to visit a dying grandparent?
Is it an excused absence for a sophomore to visit a college?
Thank you!

Grandparent, probably.

Sophmores don't need to visit colleges yet.

I would just contact your school's attendance secretary in advance, and ask that they be excused.

I didn’t contact them in advance. We took off the half days to visit my dying father but then toured the college in the city where he lives, which my sophomore will almost certainly apply to. I’m wondering if one or the other is better to put on the note.

Why do you care? Their attendance records don’t go to colleges and there will be zero action taken, even if they miss half or more of the school year.

Teacher here. I always wonder why parents care so much about attendance records. They are meaningless at the present time. I suppose parents must be recalling pre-COVID years when attendance could impact grades, etc.

NP. As a parent, I am under the impression that a teacher has no obligation to allow make-ups for tests, or any assignment actually, when an absence is unexcused. I care about excused/unexcused because I care about grades

Dying father. And I'm sorry.

If you are concerned, the answer is "cough cough, Larlo isn't feeling well today so I'm keeping him home".

We still have some teachers that will not allow makeups for unexcused absences. I guess they are rolling old school. Our HS admin does not seem to have the ability to actually enforce the grading policy among the dissenting teachers.

So have the kid.work ahead if grading is anticipated.to be a problem. Severely ill family member should be excusable. Random college visit, probably not unless it involves an audition or tryout or interview of some kind that the school schedules and you can't control.

We have very relaxed and strict teachers. Some are very rigid about make-up tests or late assignments, even when kids are sick or an emergency.

Just say your kid is sick.
