Gold hoop earrings. How big is too big?

Anonymous
45yo mom here. I’d like a pair of chunky gold hoops for Christmas this year. Is 1” diameter too big?

I never wear jewelry but would like to start wearing earrings. I’m drawn to some of the chunky larger hoops. I don’t want to look fake and trashy though.

I think it depends on the shape of your face at our age, honestly.

If you have a smaller face and good neck, sure, go for the one inch chunky hoops.

I am aware that I am largely alone in this, but I think that if you have a large, pudgy face, chunky bigger hoops look bad, like the big, busy, colorful earrings older women wear to "draw attention up": it just creates an overall dated, matronly look. So I'd recommend something that is not "chunky" in that case.

I have a fat face and look amazing in hoops. Most people actually look great in hoops. Ignore the poster above.

But since you don’t wear any jewelry, I’d suggest you start smaller and thinner at first.

1” is pretty big, but it sounds like that is what you want. The trend for a long time has been Huggies, are very small ones. But that is changing. Go ahead and get the ones that you want. The larger ones are probably more in style now, anyway. But if you don’t normally wear earrings, beware that the larger ones may irritate/annoy you. And try not to run your fingers through your hair right around your ears, you can catch the earring in a finger and yank it out.

It depends, really. Face shape, your personal style, if you wear glasses... If you like them, wear them. But I would try them before asking someone special to buy them for you and having to deal with returns and possible hurt feelings.

fwiw, I wear glasses every waking hour and bigger hoops look silly on me. Just too much going on. I stick with tiny gold hoops or diamond studs.

Go to a Nordstrom/Macy’s jewelry counter and hold up different sizes of hoop earrings. The thickness of the hoops matters too. Lots depends on your hair length and face shape.

Yes, this is a fear of mine and why I don’t wear hoops.

No. Every face but fat and round looks great in hoops. Fat round faces look terrible in hoops.

"Trashy" is very contextual. If you wear a juicy couture tracksuit tucked in some uggs, and those long, pointed acrylic nails, then yeah the chunky hoops will be fuel for the fire.

On their own I think they can look good. My only concern would be about the weight, especially if you're not used to heavy earrings.

Glasses and hoops look bad. I want to wear hoops too but they look bad with my glasses.

Unfortunately glasses make everyone look worse, including supermodels.

1” hoops are pretty small and inoffensive. If you have long hear you wear down, I would get up to 2”. Jennifer Fisher hoops are great because they’re hollow so not heavy at all.
