Thoughts on St Olaf as safety?

Great school. Nice size. Gorgeous buildings. Lots of research opportunities. Everyone truly as nice as they come. Strong merit. The most beautiful study room in the library we saw anywhere. Kids are very earnest, hard working. Small town but cute.

Honestly, there aren’t too many downsides.

I suspect the acceptance rate would be half of what it is if not for the dry campus. My understanding is that this doesn’t mean no drinking, it just means no enormous parties, and it’s a little easier to kick students out if they break egregious rules. DC is a little wild by nature so it didn’t feel like a fit, but we were very impressed.

How selective is St Olaf? DD is looking into it as a FCPS with 3.7 uw and 1400 SAT.

If I recall it’s about 50%, and I never got the sense that they played any games with their admissions stats. But tbh it felt like the education was on par with more selective colleges.

Those stats are similar to my kid’s. Got in with very nice merit.

The smell from the Malt-o-Meal plant is a bit of an acquired taste.

Nice college full of nice kids. May not be as known here, but it seems to be respected in Minnesota.

DC wants to stay a little closer to home or it would be high on the list. It’s a great school.

It's a great school. As PP said, no real downside except it's cold in MN.

That smell is the best! Love Northfield.

I have always liked the sound of it. Here's the demographics I found via google

Race and ethnicity: 66.4% White, 8.2% Hispanic/Latino, 6.5% Asian, 4.3% Two or more races, 3.3% Black or African American, 0.9% Race/ethnicity unknown, 0.1% American Indian or Alaskan Native
Gender: 42% male students and 58% female students
Housing: 93% of students live in college-owned, -operated, or -affiliated housing, and 7% live off campus
Pell Grants: 21% of students received Pell Grants in 2021-2022
International students: 10.6% from 87 countries

The 42% male also comprises a much higher proportion of athletes than the 58% female. Much more non-athlete girls than non-athletes boys. Does this have any effect on social life?

Strong in math and CS. It is pretty cold in the winter, which discourages some from applying.

I graduated 20 years ago but this is all pretty accurate and I’d say it’s a great safety.
