UVA/W&M Satellite Campuses

Why didn't the satellite campuses of UVA (UMW, GMU) or the satellite campuses of W&M (VCU, ODU, CNU) become as good as their parent universities? Shouldn't the association given them a leg up early on?

Went to w&M. Had no idea it had “satellite campuses”. I don’t think it is an actual thing.

William and Mary has an association with Richard Bland Community College, but not the others.

ODU was founded by William and Mary in the 30s, but it was independent by the 60s.

"Old Dominion University began its tradition of excellence when it was founded in 1930 by the College of William and Mary, the second oldest university in the United States. Established as an extension of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia, Old Dominion began educating teachers and engineers. The two-year school rapidly evolved into a four-year institution, and was granted independence in 1962 as Old Dominion College."

CNU was founded by WM in 1960, but it was independent by 1977. WM didn't have connections to those colleges for very long.

"When George Oliver took over as President in 1959, he did not believe that RPI still needed the name recognition that William and Mary brought. This, along with growing radicalism among the students and faculty of RPI began to sever the relationship with the parent school."

VCU was independent in 1962.

I don't think most people know that UMW and GMU were satellites of UVa or that VCU, ODU, and CNU were satellites of W&M. At the end of the day, colleges and universities are judged by what they offer students now, not by their previous associations.

It's like asking why different UC campuses are thought of differently even though they are all "University of California."

They are all different schools. And would be even if Virginia had used the more typical naming of non-flagships, e.g. UVA-Fairfax instead of GMU

UCLA started as a satellite campus of Berkeley.

I thought UVA’s satellite campus was UVA-Wise?

Aren’t they the same?
