I had one stuck at the most painful place possible (UVJ junction). The pain was so awful (worse than childbirth) I thought I was dying of something. A trip to the ER and catscan revealed the problem. The hooked me up to good pain killers and then sent me home with a script. I drank endless fluids and took pain killers until it passed. That was 3 years ago. I haven't had this painful passing occur since though I have a bunch of kidney stones according to the last CT scan. I drink lots of water (with lemon when possible). I am forever monitoring my pee for signs of dehydration. (I was very dehydrated when I ended up with the painful passing of kidney stone.) I went off soda completely-cold turkey.

If he must go into work he probably needs to take a cab or public transit so he can be on pain killers. If there is any way he can stay home and rest, do it!

You can always try a home remedy. Some of these actually work, you just have to make sure you get a good one. Also you can check out this article which gives some useful tips for passing that kidney stone.

Go see a urologist, they specialize in stones and can give a better opinion. I've had reoccuring stones - they won't do "surgery" (which is actually a laser blast) depending on how far the stone has actually traveled, if it is past a certain point, the surgery is actually non-effective as it only breaks up the stone. I only know how it works for a woman (very different for boy parts) but the other option is to go up - which for a male is VERY serious surgery.

As far as passing the stone, he should be drinking 10-15 glasses of water a day. No soda, no milk and no citrus drinks. The best medicine to take is flomax (which help increase the flow of urine). Every hour have him walk around for 10 mintues - then go pee. Do NOT hold your pee - that makes it worse.

If a stone is less that 5mm, it usually takes less that a week or so to pass - it could be taking so long because it's a big stone. It could be taking so long becuase he's not drinking enough fluid.
