| Anyone have a Campfire music player? Seems to thread the needle of a streaming, portable music device that doesn't have any other apps nor requires downloading MP3s. I don't know anyone who actually has one though. Any experience? |
| We've had one for 2 or 3 years. We got it so our son could have music, but not screens, at sleepaway camp. It's fine for that. The music quality is not great but that doesn't seem to bother him. He uses it for music at home too, which I think has kept requests to have his phone in his room at bay. It's probably overpriced for what it is, but it does what we want so we are happy with it. |
OMG! Thank you! I literally haven't encountered a single person who has one so your feedback is so helpful. I'm hoping to connect it via Bluetooth to a portable speaker at home so that my kid can use it as a home system too. What streaming platform do you use? We have Apple Music. |
We use spotify and it's been great with that. Have not tried it with apple. I don't think we have used a portable speaker with it, but my son uses it with bluetooth headphones with no problem. We bought it somewhat blindly (found it through an internet search for a music player that worked with spotify and didn't need MP3s) so I understand your concern! |
Thanks so much! Funny that you purchased it blindly because that's the boat I'm finding myself in too. So weird that there isn't much about it out there nor that there aren't alternatives. Your son must have the first version if he's had it that long - there's an updated version now with upgraded hardware but it's twice the cost - but it sounds like the first version is probably fine for basic use. |
| Bump |
| This is exactly what I'm in the market for for my dd. Will look it up! |
| My DD goes to sleepaway camp -- these are pretty popular with the girls at camp. She has one and uses it for her summers at camp. Just an FYI - this is designed and marketed as a purely sleepaway-camp specific item because most camps don't allow campers to bring anything that can connect to the internet. Look at their website and the FAQs -- it's all about sleepaway camp (even the name, ha). I wouldn't buy one of these for any use other than a sleepaway camp music player. At home there are so many other options that are multi-functional and better quality. My DD has an Alexa in her room and listens to music on that. Or the ipad. |
OP here. Thanks, I realize it's marketed specifically for sleepaway camp. That said, even if not intended for camp, what's the harm in buying anyway if the specs match what I'm looking for? My kids aren't allowed to have an Alexa or similar device in their rooms so it's not a solution for us, and the whole point was to keep the ipads out of their rooms. Really just trying to find something that is a music player ONLY with no other functionality so a multifunctional device doesn't fit the niche I'm looking for. Has your DD had a good experience with it? |
Oh ok, if you're not willing to budge on any of that, and your kids actually listen to music a whole lot in their rooms, then sure, get it, whatever, no harm. Like the PP said, the quality and storage are just ok, and I agree that it is overpriced. It was worth it for my camper bc there is absolutely no internet usage allowed at camp, and she likes to listen to music in the bunk much more than she would at home (she reads more in her room instead, but not much reading at camp, ha). Her Alexa is also a kids alexa with lots of parental controls, FWIW. |
OP here. Thanks for the response. I'm definitely open to other potential options which was my goal in posting here. I forgot to add that my kids are looking for something portable so that's another reason why something like an Alexa wouldn't work and also why their tablets (their current way of listening to music) isn't ideal for them either. The Mighty device is another one on the market that tries to fill this portable music niche, but you can only download to it, not stream apps live. Campfire is literally the only thing I can find that is portable, doesn't have other apps, and allows streaming. I actually know a bunch of parents who are looking for something similar so it's so weird that this is an unfilled market. |
Thanks so much for posting this, OP, and for all of the responses. We also don't have an Alexa or anything similar and I don't want to get one, but my dd loves listening to music. I think it's ridiculous that we have to pay extra for a low frills device, but oh well. I'm about to bite the bullet and purchase. |
Hi PP, OP here. I found a potential different option on Amazon. Search Amazon for the brand Innioasis for a similar type of device. It comes with more apps but they can be deleted and a password set so that kids can't download anything. Overall though it's just a kid-friendly device intended for music (streaming and MP3s) and audiobooks. Wanted to share! It's cheaper than the Campfire player so if it craps out, I won't be as upset. |
| Hey! I was compelled to share~I too wanted a No electronics in my kids room when he was young. We did that.It was no issue. We did have a clock radio but we even pulled that out for him b/c of the annoying red clock time light. Anyway, Another story-my in-laws wanted a no frills Truck.NO A/C,Radio,and to have roll down windows. This "Modified " Stripped Down version cost MORE than what they could have bought off the lot.[ but remember people, less will break and cost most on ware and tear in the long run...like those simple gadgets perhaps? Be well |
