New Principal at Oyster Adams? Whoa.

Anonymous
What are people hearing about the new principal? She is canceling international trips that have been a feature of that school for more than a decade - is that true? Sounds like political suicide.

What is going on over there?

What did they say when you asked about why the trips were cancelled?

They have NOT cancelled international trips. They have cancelled international exchange trips because of liability and as dictated by DCPS. Stop stirring things up here. If you have something to say, talk to her. Her doors are wide open. Don't be a coward and try to create some sort of scandal here. The new principal is great. I have faith in her. You can go ahead and schedule your own student exchange trip if it's so important to you. The students will still go on trips. Which, btw, NOBODY is entitled to have. Get over it!

Uhm, defensive much? Sounds like she has in fact cancelled trips, as OP said. It could very well be because DCPS made her do it, but your post doesn’t help things.

I have no dog in this fight. OP came in ready to fight starting with the title of the thread. Totally came off as wanting to trash this new principal.

Absolutely. This isn't someone from the outside who’s wondering what’s going on “over there” - C’mon! To pretend that you’re coming here to get information that you don’t have it’s ridiculous. This is someone who clearly is in the inside, knows exactly what is happening, but wants to make it public and create trouble. We had our share of bad Principals, and so far this isn’t one of them. You can just request a meeting with her and share your grievances. But this is low.

What doesn’t help is people using this forum anonymously to trash our Principal. Request a meeting and address your concerns in the proper forum. Saying that canceling an international trip is political suicide? Ridiculous attempt to create a negative buzz. That’s certainly not helpful.

I also have no dog in the fight but OP clearly has an agenda that has nothing to do with the trips. And a simple call to the school could have answered their question.

Np here. Calls to the school means you'll receive a script or talking points in response.

Not an OA family, but do you mean that she's replaced international exchange trips with international not-exchange trips?

Something like that. An exchanged trip to Spain was replaced for a not-exchanged trip to Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico was chosen because more students could go, e.g. those who don’t have passports (FYI Less than half of the 7th grade class used to go to the Spain trip) but Puerto Rico would still meet the language immersion requirements.

A Costa Rica trip, which includes language immersion and staying with local families was not cancelled.

They sent a letter yesterday explaining everything. So this post is no longer relevant unless we’re using this platform to complain.

OP’s question was if it was true trips were cancelled. I’m fine with a scripted response of yes or no.

The 7th grade Spain trip was an exchange program, as in students stayed in the home of a Spain student and then the Spanish students came to the US and stayed with a family. It’s a very long and complicated story in this case, and there are other factors, but DCPS basically said the liability of having 7th graders do this was too risky. And the organization of the trip and exchange program was all on teachers and parent volunteers, meaning the liability was solely on DCPS if anything happened. DCPS is releasing new rules about these international trips that require schools to use a travel agent.

The 7th grade teachers are putting together a Puerto Rico trip where kids will stay in a hotel rather than in homes.

There are a lot of feelings and anger over this and it seems like people want to blame the principal rather than understand the nuances of how DCPS operates and how much control the principal had in the decision.
