Our AC system is 15+ years old.
We have radiator heat and don’t want to change that. Ideal would be replacing the AC unit we have on the roof & air handler in our attic with the heat pump. Don’t want to mess with duct work, if needed. NW DC location. Any recommendations? |

Most HVAV companies do heat pumps as well. So pick a reputable HVAC team and get quotes for a heat pump.
Ideal world do this before the end of the year since 1)who knows if Trump will kill the $2k heat pump credit, and 2) the new EPA mandated refrigerant starts in 2025 and required all the major manufacturers to change their systems to accommodate, so expect 2025 heat pumps to be anywhere from 10-20% more expensive |
| Don’t go to FH Fuhr or Croppe Metcalfe. I just had a heat pump installed last month and I would recommend my company but they don’t service DC. They said that prices are slated to rise 20% after January regardless of tariffs because the manufacturers are switching to a new coolant. |
Sizing is much more critical with heat pumps than with combustion furnaces. It happens all the time that experienced HVAC guys just follow the rules of thumb they've always used when doing a heat pump and they end up with a system that works poorly. The problem that plagues the business is that proper sizing takes time, at least a couple hours inspecting and measuring the house and another couple hours back at the office crunching numbers. And it needs to be done before preparing a bid because it drives the equipment selection. There's not a lot of guys willing to put that much time into a job they may not get, where they'll probably get underbid by a guy who just guesses what might work and quotes that. And not a lot of guys willing to engage in consumer education. |

OP here: how big of a system and what did they cost? |
We got a Lennox Elite variable capacity high efficiency 46k BTU, 19.5 SEER2 heat pump. We paid $15k (Pepco rebate included) and got a $1000 gift card from Lennox and will get a $2000 tax credit when we file next year. |
