10 yrs old and already getting zits

Anonymous
My son I only 10 but I have started to notice zits popping up here and there. I could take him to the dermatologist, but before I do that, what are kids using these days as over the counter treatments? I am guessing there is more effective stuff out there now versus when I was a kid.

Mine too. I just started using the clearasil pads and it’s enough for now.

My teens sons like the overnight acne patches. Can’t remember the name of them -but usually are right by the rest of the skincare stuff.

Better diet. Better hygiene routine. Better exercise. Cleaner all cotton sheets.

So what do we do if we have done all those things since pre-pregnancy and he still has zits?

My DDs like those too.

I’m inclined to take mine to the derm just because skincare is so scammy.

IF that is true, and not just cope, then perhaps see an endocrinologist, as something is amiss with the hormones.

Dermatologists are mostly for treating symptoms, not curing the issue. Sometimes symptom treatment is all that's needed. Other times not.

The overnight pimple patches, and at 10 I would try an acne wash for sensitive skin.

You’re way behind the times. Puberty onset at 9 is now considered normal and 10 year olds get acne.

OP, my 10 y o is getting some acne on his nose, mostly whiteheads. He’s washing with Cerave, we switched to Elta sunscreen (he used to just use blue lizard everywhere), and I help him use the below a few times a week. That’s keeping things pretty well under control but we have a derm appointment coming up just to talk about options. The patches work on him but he hates wearing them so I don’t push it.

It’s part of puberty and some are genetically predisposed to acne. CeraVe has a mild acne facial wash with a follow up face moisturizer for kids with acne. Get the spot remover to cover zits for quicker healing.

They might go away for awhile then come back closer to puberty

The basic no foolishness brands are what the dermatologist will recommend. Stay out of Sephora, go to CVS and ask the pharmacist.

My kids like those patches.

That said, are you sure it is acne? My DD had something that looked similar to acne at that age but it wasn’t. Some type of dermatitis she needed a special rx cream for. Just a thought. Throwing it out there since 10 is on the younger side for acne.

+1. Remind them about good hygiene. You’d be surprised how tweens/teens slack off on the things you’ve been talking about since they were babies.
