Why do I gain weight after drinking alcohol?

Anonymous
I’m not a big drinker. Maybe have 1-2 drinks twice a month (social events). But without fail, if I have any alcohol I gain 1-2 pounds. I assume it is water weight, but it takes about a week to come off.

Anyone else have an explanation?

This. Alcohol is poison. The older you get, the worse at metabolizing poisons your system becomes, and the longer it takes to clear them. While that process occurs, you retain water.

Stop drinking.

This, or simply psychological. "confirmation bias" - "when individuals believe strongly in a certain hypothesis, they optimally seek information that confirms it, allowing them to build confidence more efficiently, and often ignore evidence to the contrary."

1-2 drinks, twice a month. IF you are being honest about that, then that is insignificant unless you have a lack of the ethanol metabolites due to genetics. Many Asians and people of Asian descent such as American Indians aka Native Americans, have trouble metabolizing ethanol.

More than likely it is psychosomatic, since 1-2 lbs of water gain is insignificant. Drink a small bottle of water 16fl0z and that is a pound you gained in a few seconds.

Also you probably snack on salty or carby foods when you drink, and salt and sugar make you retain water.

Oh please. If someone stays a certain weight and the scale goes up whenever they drink it’s hardly rocket science or anything that complicated.

100%. I’m a lean toned 49 yo woman- I eat whatever I want. Alcohol made me bloated and made my face puffy, gave me anxiety and made me unhappy.

It’s so clear to see how alcohol ages people, by middle age.

Oh please. 1 or 2 pounds is insignificant. Brush up on ratios and fractions. Most kids in public schools never learned them well.
