I feel stuck in a nightmare

Anonymous
Every few months my role at work changes. It's been mostly manageable beyond stress of transition. I have found out my role is changing again, in a much larger way. I have been having meetings for it learning the ropes, and it's like I am screaming inside as I pretend to be chill and calm and happy about the new scope of work. Have you ever felt this way? If I were told today that I am being fired, I would be THRILLED. I hate being told that I am doing such a great job I now have to work more, doing things I don't want to do. There is something completely absurd about my situation. I'm being introduced to the team I am going to manage tomorrow and I just want to disappear.

This. Also, you sound like you are a highly qualified and capable person, so start looking for other jobs. Think of all.the experience you can list on your resume!

You have two wishes left.

2025 is the year to find a new job. You don’t have to live like this.

I am looking.I am extremely resentful right now because having to do all this training/learning and new leadership crap right now means I will be in miserable stress mode during Thanksgiving and Christmas. It really is not right. It is ruining time with my family.

Stop being good. Leave work at work. Do your 40 hours and if things fall off the plate, they fall off the plate. Let go.

It's not the time so much as the scope of work. I have never minded answering a quick email late (we are global, so it happens), but I do very much mind supervisory duties of this kind, the massive amount of tech work, the high number of meetings...It's not what I signed up for at all. Even with a raise (there is none now, maybe in three months) I do not want it.

Tell them that! Especially if there is no raise and highly value you and there is still a need for people to fill whatever functions you have been filling. Plenty of people I manage have let me know that they are not interested in moving to roles where they need to manage, or do business development, or whatever. It’s a bummer for me as a manager, and their positions might be at risk if the work they currently do dries up, but otherwise, it is what it is. If you’re good at your job, you have some power here, and absolutely can push back. The risk is that other future opportunities might be cut of for you, wages may stagnate, and you might get a reputation for not being a team player that can hurt your standing and job security, but you don’t have to be a complete pushover.

I was ambushed, did not expect it at all. I am replacing someone great who started just a few months ago. Honestly I think my manager was hoping to ambush me so I could not say no. He is someone I dread and always puts people on the spot. It was presented to me as "you will be replacing Lauren", not as "would you be interested in replacing Lauren?"

I made myself cope with all the challenges at the expense of my family time In the past; now I have major issues with my teenager…

I could have written this post. Literally in the same situation and I am on the verge of quitting without a new job once I get my bonus. I am double nearly double the work without getting a cent more.

No advice, just solidarity. I have been at my company for over 10 years and can’t believe this is how it’s playing out.

Yeah, me too. 18 months out of full time work. Finished the first half of my grad cert at GW so I am happy with that. Would be nice to start getting some interviews again.

I just want this nightmare to end.
