We're a couple of nonprofit types in our 50s getting ready to move in together and we need help developing a joint budget. We earn about $200k together. Both have $1M+ each in liquid assets and $500k each in equity in our separate houses and relatively thrifty lifestyles. He is a budgets and thinks it is pretty straightforward. She does not budget, but keeps track of her income/expenditures in buckets.
We did a lot of talking past each other in our initial conversations. So we think a neutral 3rd party would be helpful. We imagine they would have a process to take our separate income and expenses and create a starting point for a realistic budget we can use to talk about priorities and adjust accordingly. Ideally, someone we can pay hourly for a one-time engagement since we would rather avoid a full-on financial advisor and the $5-10k in annual fees. |
