Significant weight gain (40 lbs in 5 months) 12 year old on low-ogestrel

Anonymous
My tween is on BC pills because of a medical issue. The dr said this is necessary for at least two years.

She's been on the pill since May. Since June, she's gained 40 lbs. This seems so excessive and i wonder if the dr should switch to another pill.

Anyone have any experience with this? What pill worked that did not cause such side effects?

OP, I would post what the medical condition is to see if anyone has experience with it. I would be seeking out a second opinion here. 40 pounds is a lot, I can’t imagine how this has effected her self esteem and just how she feels in general.

I don't have experience with low-ogestrel. But my kid has a mood disorder and I'm in a lot of groups for kids with mood disorders. Anyway, a lot of the kids are on Risperdone or Abilify, both of which cause significant fast weight gain. Many of them are consulting with endocrinologists for their teens and looking at the GLP-1s to combat the weight gain.

thank you. she's been through so much. but an endocrinologist may be the next step. it's suspected she may have pcos.

That is not acceptable and I bet you in two years they’ll just say she needs them forever. You need to seek as many opinions and alternatives as possible.

she has menorrhagia.

If her iron levels are ok I’d suck it up with menorrhagia and get off the pill.

It’s better to feel miserable for a few days because of a heavy flow than indefinitely because of being fat.

I would get a second opinion asap. Her mental health is important too, and of course this will hurt it. the doctor should be alarmed and should want to help. 40 pounds in 9 months is alarming

Sorry your DD is going through this and you too. Hugs

typo, but it would still be alarming if it was 9, but 5 is alarming as well of course.

Definitely get another opinion. 40 extra pounds on a 12 year old frame isn't ideal. This may be a course of treatment that works for some people, but the side-effects outweigh the benefits here.

Talk to her doctor about any and all alternatives.

I hope we are finally getting to a place where the medical establishment recognizes what some drugs are doing to our metabolism. I gained 90lbs on a medication, and the doctor just repeatedly made noise at me about “diet and exercise.” As if I were sitting on my a$$ all day eating twinkies. Yeah, no — my bmi was on the low side of normal when I started the med. I was in my 30s, and you, OP, are talking about a child. Deal with this now, the problems that stem from obesity are not only awful to live with, they can kill you.

thanks, everyone. i am waiting for a call back from her pediatric gyno. she's going for another blood test on saturday to check cbc and iron levels.

the problem is when she gets her period, the bleeding doesn't stop. her iron was so low she was anemic and almost needed a blood transfusion.

having that level of bleeding in middle school is torture.

thankfully, she isn't mentioning her body or weight. i assume because she wears leggings every day, she doesn't realize how much she's gained.

Did she see a hematologist to look for bleeding disorders? That’s what my DD’s menorrhagia was caused by. If they know what’s causing it, there may be better ways to treat it.

OP this was me in my 20s. Have they checked for fibroids? They just kept thinking I was too young but when they went in to remove the one fibroid they had seen, there were several giant ones
